My sister-in-law's father passed away 9-7-07.

From the Columbus Dispatch....and the Ohio Supreme Court News...

""Retired Judge Paul W. Martin, who served for several decades on the Franklin County Common Pleas Court, has died. He was 86.

"He was a well-respected judge and a friendly, personable judge who never met a stranger, and would easily cut to the chase of complicated legal issues," O'Brien said.

Martin, a Republican, was appointed to the bench in 1971 by then-Gov. James A. Rhodes. He went on to win consecutive terms in 1974, 1980 and 1986, until his mandatory retirement in 1992. Martin returned to the court system as a visiting judge until he turned 80.

Martin was a World War II Army veteran with the 101st Airborne Division and participated in the D-Day invasion as well as in two other major military operations. He earned his law degree from Ohio State University in 1948.

In his tenure on the bench, Martin developed a tough but fair reputation for encouraging lawyers to settle cases before trial. He became a master of handling his complex docket and believed lawyers were better at gauging the strengths of their cases and how a trial would probably end, he said in a 1986 interview..........."

Her father was one of the most intelligent people I have met. He also was a great warrior when he served. Her brother still has the Luger taken from a German Panzer Commander (and yes, for those collectors, he has both mags and the family will not sell it for any price) from the Battle of the Bulge. If any of you have seen the picture of Eisenhower talking to the 101/506 before they left England on D-Day minus one, he is second to the right of center.

Great you took the time to remember such a worthy veteran in such a well spoken way.

Another from the war gone. :(
