I just acquired a 1987 West German P226 in gooooood condition. My plan is to abuse the hell out of it. It came with the two original mags, but I need some more. I have heard good things about the Mec-Gar mags. Any thoughts???

Once I take some pictures of the gun, I will post some if you guys want to see it.

I've had good luck with the Mec Gar 18 rounders I have for my 226.

I got mine at Brownells.

MecGar manufacture the OEM magazines for SIG now.

I've had the best luck with the ones actually marked SIG rather than just MecGar, and I'm especially fond of the parkerized ones.

I really dig the old all Kraut SIG's. Nice score.

I didnt have good luck with the MecGar "extended Capacity" mags. These where 17rd mags the same size as the original 15rd mags.

Of my two remaining P226s, all the mags are the old "zipperbacks" or "sawbacks".

Yeap, what everyone else said, but get the +2 extension for the MG 18 rounders for a total of 20.

I have found that the springs are sometimes unerpowered, but pop in a +10% spring and go for it. (The underpower spring contributes to failure to lockback on empty).

never had any failures with any of mine. Although i wish they did a parkerized mag, and i find their plastic baseplates a little soft

I like the "phosphate" coated mags. You can find them at CDNN for around $30 or so. As someone else said, pick up some Wolf +10 springs too.

Nice find. It looks brand new.

I know a local shop here that has some of the older Sig parkerized mags periodically.

Give Paul a call, he might be able to hook you up. I have bought a lot of mags from him, and had very good service. He also carries the MecGar's.

I'm not affiliated with him in any way, other than putting his son through college. ;)

Mec-Gar used to be the SIG O.E.M. magazine supplier. They switched to Checkmate Industries and there have been sporadic problems reported with some of them.

that's news to me

ETA:
are you sure about this? They don't even list Sig mags as a product

go to sigforum and search the SIG Pistols board for checkmate.

Mec-Gar Magazines are Good to Go. Up until I sold my 226 last week Mec-Gar mags were all I used.

I also never had a problem with any of the Mec-Gar magazines I used in my P226R 9mm. I always replaced the floorplates with the rubber-covered versions that Sig sold (not sure if they still market those).

If my agency reverted to "Sig only" for personal weapons, I'd snap up a pre-2004 P226 in 9mm, as many of those Mec-Gar 17 round mags as I could afford, and not worry about a thing.

Regards,

Kevin

I run 15 round MecGar mags in my 1988 P226 with no issues. I prefer them to the factory (dovetail back, phosphate coated) mags.
