Hey all,

So I have been shooting weapons since I was 13, and feel that I have developed safe weapons handling habits, and am comfortable (but not careless) around firearms.

That being said, all my shooting up to this point has been target shooting, mainly with my dad's Browning BBR .270 and a Remington .22.

A few years ago, I got bitten by the 1911 bug, and bought a Springfield Parkerized Loaded 1911. It got upgraded with a Cylinder & Slide trigger kit, Ed Brown GI Plug, and a Smith & Alexander Mainspring Housing replacing the ILS. I've had the occasional FTRTB, always fixed by smacking the back of the slide. It's had about 1000 rounds fired through it, and I've learned quite a bit by installing those parts myself, having the work inspected by a local 1911 smith.

I just finished by AR-15, a Stag Model 1 with Magpul CTR/MIAD/Trigger Guard/MBUS/and Centurion Arms C4 Rail. It's never failed on me, although it's only had ~300 rounds fired through it, all in a target shooting environment.

My questions are;

1.) What would be the first step towards learning how to shoot 'tactically'? I am a Mid at Canoe U, but there are no funds or programs available to teach the average Mid these skills, so I need to look elsewhere.

2.) Would these two weapons be suitable for a carbine course, or a weekend tactical course? I know the rifle isn't BCM or Colt, but would it hold up to a weekend of hard shooting?

3.) Anyone in Maryland who shoots IDPA or something who would be willing to introduce a new guy?

I would say taking some carbine and pistol training classes would be your best bet. And yes the rifle you have would do fine for those types of courses.

Evan,

You are in a pretty good spot in Maryland. Close to Pennsylvania (rapidly becoming a training super state) and Virginia - not to mention some great instructors are in and around MD!

I may be biased (:dance3:) but a Vickers Shooting Method Instructor would be a great place for you to start - there's even several closer than me! Otherwise, you are relatively close to U.S. Training Center which is like Mecca for firearms enthusiasts.

Your firearms should be fine - it's always a good idea to have a complete spare bolt for your AR. You probably know the required tweekys for you 1911 better than I. Keep them both lubed!
