What about their PDW? Any info on it. I've always liked KAC products, but not their price tags. Does anyone other than KAC do the dimpling on the barrels? A 1-7 twist, Chrome lined, Gov. Profile, Mid-length gas system, Low profile gasblock for under a Larue handguard, with a dimpled barrel would be nice... Hint hint. KAC's new upper will be using a different bolt? Dont know if I like that idea. Better is good, but easy to find is better. "That makes sense?" I'd like to try one of their new lowers.

2k isn't bad when you consider the included options and the quality level...

Take a 6920 and deck it out with KAC gear to the same level...which you really can't do since a lot of those features are KAC only.

Cost is not bad.

Fed is right IMHO... I posted this on another site:

For example, I just picked up a NIB 6920 for $1200 shipped (which was a great deal). Now let's add up some parts:

- FF Rail: ~$300
- 2 Stage Trigger: ~$275
- SOPMOD Stock: ~$200
- Rear BUIS: ~$175

Just those four items would total to about $950 - add that to the $1200 for a 6920 and you're already at $2150... And at that price you still don't get all of the other features that the E3 has (ambi-lower, E3 bolt upgrade, etc)!

I'm dreaming here, but it would be nice if KAC would offer a package that includes the E3 and an NT4... I wonder if Lawmen's would consider it.

KevinB

For that price - I intend to get 2 or 3.

I thought we'd be seeing these guns a lot sooner. Well that's what I was told at the KAC booth at SHOT anyway.

Love KAC stuff, but that folding front site/rail isn't particularly appealing.

2k doesn't seem that bad too me, though I wouldn't consider it any sort of deal based on what's currently available.

No problem... As soon as I hear some more news, I'll shoot you an e-mail.

You know, I thought the same thing until I got to play with one - freaking ingenious... They've taken this concept to the next level, but I don't think I can comment on it.

I think that as soon as the first E3 makes it out the door to civi's, it'll be a milestone of sorts for KAC... I say that because they'll be running full tilt for the GWOT while getting rifles out to the general public... Hopefully this trend, once started, will continue and include some of their other goodies (PDW, SR-25, etc.)

I think a lot of people are used to buying a basic weapon, and making additions as needed, or as they get the funding.

Picking up a turn key weapon is always going to cost more than a basic one, but in this case, its certainly cheaper than doing KAC upgrades down the road.

We will be shipping a small number of non-ambo guns out over the next couple of months and we will hopefully be taking orders at shot show FOR DELIVERY FOR ONCE!
We go to great efforts to make our rails cover a desired amount of the bbl /gas tube. Not every one has the same reasoning for why they do it a certain way. I would be interested in knowing why you think it is important to cover it(gas block).
I have been putting a few rounds on some guns lately and I am pleased with how they shoot and how they feel. They are built to be as reliable as possible. The accuracy appears to be about 1.5 MOA average on the small number of guns I have tested. Everyone that shoots the rifle seems to like it. We hope to get production up to speed so we can get some of these rifles out there.

Thanks for the update. 1.5" is MORE than acceptable from a chrome lined barrel.

Is the gas block pinned?

III
12-14-07, 15:24
No , the gas block is pressed on and has a set screw. We also dimple the bbl to have good contact with the set screw. The pressfit alone is enough to retain the block and provides for a very tight seal.We do use taper pins on rifles that have a sight, bayonet, or suppressor mount.Easier installation of taper pins is one reason to leave the gas block exposed. We also are using a new bbl retension method and have a improved bbl nut.

First off my comment wasnt a dig at the platform or anything. It's pretty damn cool looking.

The gas block being covered is more of personal thing with me. I like having a large amount of my barrel covered so when I bounce around and shoot of an odd serface I don't have to worry about the barrel or gas block getting banged up. I know the chances that I could knock the gas block out of alignment is pretty slim but the more rail that covers it the less chance that it could happen. Like I sed the chance of that happning is small and it's probley me being more anal then I need to be about it.

Thanks for the response. I'd prefer that the gas block be pinned but it sounds like you are pretty confident with the the current attachment method. I'll be looking forward to getting my hands on one when they are officially released. I'm sure with the KAC name on it the product will be excellent.

FWIW -- you can always pin the block if you want -- KAC's press on method and the dimpled set screw make it so even an unskilled baboon could drill it with the taper reamer (I get mine from Brownells..) and insert 1 or 2 taper pins should you choose.

Me -- I keep hoping for the uppers from the SR16 series to be for sale :D

Nick- no offense but what Stick posted seems to be different than the three different rifles I see pictured at the top.

Stick's is a carbine upper with the KAC flip front sight and the carbine URX which is a combo I like very much. There's a 10.5" rifle on the KAC website and I believe the upper on Stick's gun is very close except Stick's probably has the 14.5" barrel.

ETA: I take that back- it's not a carbine. Is it midlength? KAC Midlength?

For 2k it would be nice if the rail covered the gas block.

We tried that, but the stark transition from the "big square end of the rail forend" to the barrel diameter is not that appealing to most of us.
Remember that we are using a mid-length gas tube on this SR-15, so we are using the mid-length forend to protect the gas tube, while providing several square inches of accessory mounting rail real estate in front of your normal grasp on the handguard. I think extending the rail any further than that simply provides more rail than you need on a 16" barrel carbine.
This also lets us give you a more robust low profile gas block because it does not need to be shaved-down to fit within the forend void.

Also, some of my prototype photographs Kevin posted above (the ones with the "fuze & hairs") are of a 14.5" GI carbine barrel showing the practicality of providing the "More Real Estate" (MRE) forend concept we (KAC) originally introduced back in the mid-90's, on a Government type carbine barrel, while providing aditional sighting radius using our integral folding front sight. Obviously the original "A" frame front sight is shaved way down to achieve this. But if you are stuck with the standard M4 length gas tube, it shows you an option down the road when we are able to market Mid-Length URX Forend Kits.

Grant is right.

Add up the costs of the indivdual parts. You are getting top notch parts and some features you cannot get anywhere else.

You could not build this rifle yourself for what it sells complete.

Oh, I apologize. It wasn't mean to point out you were wrong at all. Sorry again.

I was just thinking Kevin was anxiously awaiting one of the three rifles posted up top to be for sale and thought the "M4" version was different. This is because he already has a few uppers built like the "M4" version and I thought he was looking for something different- like the ones above.

And by the way- are you telling me Stick paid for that? I thought he was always just given everything! ;)

At 2K that rifle is one of the best deals going on right now. A factory KAC rifle with the URX, and proper BUIS, as well as those ambi features and sling mounts would amount to a lot of $$$ if you tried to build the same on your own.

Yes, I have a pre-production T&E gun that Trey was nice enough to send me for the Pat Rogers class I'm taking this weekend.

Stay tuned for WAY more pics. I intend to photograph every inch of this thing. There are some very cool features. Please don't be too rough on me re: these pics as they are with a point and shoot on a hotel room floor.

So far I am impressed, and see good reasons for many of the design choices. Look forward to seeing a production version as well.

My point was for KAC to sell them to the public. Items provided for unit of individuals to T&E are hardly for sale to the public.

Coldbue - Dave thanks for the clarrifications.

Rusted -- as from what I have been told by two people -- the normal versions will come out first -- and then the ambi -- but I may have been mistaken.

It also appears that KAC won't be doing anything SBR related for a variety of reasons, all of which are valid IMHO.

Had some trigger time behind one this weekend. I guess it was OK :p

But if Costa wasn't in good shape, and didn't give me a ride to the range, I totally had the plan of kicking him in the nuts and running away into the woods with that rifle....

I had the chance to shoot one of the 1.1-4 NXS (IIRC) last time I was in GA and was very impressed, but have not shot the 2.5-10. I think one will be going on my next rifle, but don't know which yet.

Every time that picture gets posted someone has a comment about my dads shooting style(Weaverish). Aside from shooting KAC related guns my father shot competitively in the Police pistol combat league . He did quite well was the top shot in the state a number of years and top shot in the nation one year. The customization of his revolvers led to further tinkering with guns and the birth of KAC. I remember he would trim trees that were growing too close to powerlines with his .38 Smith& Wesson. Even though he does not shoot much lately I would not piss him of inside of 300 yds with a pistol and 1000 with a rifle. He still does pretty well especially in front of a crowd or if there is money on the table. He hit a 9in plate on the first shot at 200 yds with a Mk-23 at a recent company picnic for a five dollar bet.
