View Full Version : Vtac or Gear Sector? - UPDATE: GEAR SECTOR FTW!
I realize that the Gear Sector is a very finely made piece, but I can't figure out how it's worth double the price of the Vtac for my needs. The light is a Surefire G2X Tactical. I have a Vtac/G2 LED combo on my MP15-22, and it works great, hugs closely to the rail, and generally just works. I had talked myself into the GS mount as this is going to be my primary rifle, but as I've dropped coin on things like KAC Buis and signed up for a Vickers Tactical class, I'm starting to look for ways to save cash. FWIW, I still plan to order a handstop, and their QD kit for my old-style SOPMOD stock from GS. Just need some input on the light mount.
Thanks!
Wait, an MP15-22 (http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Category4_750001_750051_757906_-1_757896_757896_image) is your primary rifle?
Ha, that literally made me laugh out loud. Sorry, my wording was a little off. No, my primary is NOT an MP15-22 (but you know those minimags be puttin' the hurt on ya). I currently have a Vtac mount on my MP15-22 that seems to work well. My primary rifle is/will be a DD 16" LW w/14.0 Lite rail upper that should be here next week for me to assemble to my DD Lower. My question is whether the Vtac is good enough for me to buy another for my primary rifle, or should I pony up for the GS and if so, why? Is double the price worth it?

In fact, consider that stolen!
Ah, gotcha, makes more sense.
I have a VTAC. I broke it installing it. I am sure I somehow did something wrong in the process resulting in the break, but here it sits, broken nonetheless.
I am quite fond of the Gear Sector mounts. no broken samples as yet.
I have 2 GS mounts. the QD sling mount for my rail and the weapon light mount for my X300. The light mount is the one that has the 45% offset. Ihave my light mounted on the 9 o clock rail and the offset sit between that and the 12 o clock position. It's solid and very well made. So is my QD sling mount. Definitely worth the extra coin!

Padded VTAC...
Padded VTAC...
Hmmmm...I have one of those too, but in this case I was referring to light mounts, not slings...unless you're suggesting that I pad the VTAC to prevent the plastic from breaking under impact? I can see it now: "The All-New IWC Padded VTAC Light Mount-n-Slot Light Mount";)

I am pretty sure they were discussing light mounts, not slings. ;)
That's funny...
FWIW...I have 3 Gear Sector light mounts and for me they are the only light mount that fits my personal shooting needs. I'm right handed and have them mounted on the right side rail towards the very front of the rail and they just clear the troy battle site. I use the over the top grip and I can activate the light with minimal manipulation.:D. The VTAC would not work because it is too flush and hits the BUIS.....I have since changed the rail panels to the XTM's so don't rag on me lol
Like This...:D

I've used the VTac mount for a little over a year on my AR now. I also used that rifle for a couple of classes. Never experienced any durability problems so far.
I'm w/ Tzoid as I have 4 (3 Scouts + 1 X300) of Jason's mounts & they are GTG + his CS is OUTSTANDING.
Here is a better pic with my Knights SR-15 E3 and a Surefire 6PX Pro

Gear Sectors stuff is very nice and rock solid.

I've been using the Gear Sector light mounts on a few different rifles and configurations for a while now and have had no issues whatsoever. I just recently picked up a couple of VTac light mounts to try out. I was not impressed with the construction when installing the mounts, seemed flimsy to me; although I have not manged to break one yet. Depending on placement they will interfere with certain front BUIS. I had to do some trimming to get it to work with my Magpul MBUS.
I received my package from Gear Sector today. I must say what a nice piece of equiptment...low profile and very sturdy. The customer service and shipping turn around was great. I'm glad I spent the extra money on this mount.

A big thanks to Jason Trusty of Gear Sector! I ended up deciding that the aluminum was the way to go over plastic in this case. I ended up ordering a Gear Sector 6P mount, a handstop, a QD socket for my Gen1 SOPMOD, and some sling swivels. Jason is a stand-up guy! I've got a Vicker's class this Sunday, and he was out of the SOPMOD QD sockets. Not only did he dig around and find one, he included it at no charge! Wow! Here's how the light is setup on my rifle. I originally was going to use a G2X Tactical, but (1) I left it @ home, and (2) I decided that the nice aluminum mount needed a nice aluminum bodied light to go in it, so Karmapolice swapped me his 6PX Tactical for my G2X (plus I bought him dinner from Chick-Fil-A;)) Please excuse the crappy cell phone pics, but they sort of show how everything lines up. I couldn't be happier:
