i'm considering buying a savage fp in .308, and am not sure which barrel length i want (20" or 24"). the gun will be used primarily for target shooting, but i may try hunting with it also. the 20" will obviously weigh less, but i'm not sure how much as savage's web site only gives one weight. and would the accuracy be effected much by the reduced length?

Accuracy is not necessarily dependant on length of barrel.

agreed. 20-22inch would be an optimal length, but youhaven't told us how far you plan to shoot..

there are no public ranges in my area so distance is dependent on what private land is available to me. i am a novice precision shooter, but i would like to be able to reach at least 500 yards.

survey says you'll be fine with a 20incher out to 500 yards..

if you consistently want to shoot out to 800-1000 the data suggests you stick with 22inches or more with the 175smk boolet.

I just had my 26" bbl chopped to 20". It's far handier, and since I only get out to 1,000 a couple times a year, the weight reduction and quickness of the shorter bbl was far more important.

I'll be at the 1,000 next week to see how it does, but running the numbers, I should be able to hit that far with my 168's while remaining supersonic. The Hart bbl with my ammo is very fast.
