View Full Version : Let's see your wildlife photo's that you photographed yourself.
This is a subtle spin off perhaps of the truly wonderful Photographing firearms and gear thread that has a wealth of knowledge for not just guns N gear pics but pic taking in general. I finally got a nice little Canon Powershot SD1300 IS Digital ELPH and even more important probably a high quality tripod with a ton of adjustments and such...not that the tripod really figures into the few Wildlife pics that I have captured so far, but for the guns N gear it's worth it's weight in gold.
So moving on, I just figured I would share my first two wildlife pics I have taken just around my home so far with the new camera, and hopefully others have some they would like to share as well. Love to see em if you got em:)

WOW....thanks gents, those pics are beautiful. I love bird wildlife, and the Planet Earth episode featuring the Birds of Paradise was easily my favorite. Those swans are beautiful, however they will beat the shit out of you if you give them the chance....my best fishing pal was trying to be a good Samaritan by trying to remove somebody's discarded fishing line hung up around its neck and wing....long TRUE story short, we ended up in the ER with my pal having a broken arm. The amount of power generated by the swan's one untangled wing was unbelievable.
Birds of prey.....more of them please:) My main wildlife pics goals or target images are 1.) a shot of the breeding pairs of Owls on my property, and 2.) a shot of one of my favorite animals the Red Fox.
Distant 3.) A nice filled out and healthy Bobcat.
The Planet Earth show gave me a whole new respect for wildlife photography and videography. They waited like 3 yrs. to finally get the image of the Snow Leopard IIrc...bear in mind the Snow Leopard lives in the same caves that OBL and his short bus crew live in the Hindu Kush Mtn. Range/Pakistan.
After looking at the Mallard again, I would almost say that the picture looks better than the real thing. That is for sure professional quality.

Not only does AZ have the best Gun laws but has some fantastic looking terrain. Great pics, it's amazing how buck's generate those sometimes massive racks all within a yr. The velvet on the antlers is always neat to see as well.
Since when did a jackass get a fancy name like Burro:D
Those asses are pretty neat looking if you ask me. They live in some rugged area and can climb like nothing.

Those are really beautiful animals...and indeed they are amazing climbers, I rode all the way down to the Grand Canyon floor and then back up on your standard variety Jackass. Those trails are way to narrow for comfort, yet the ass has zero problems navigating it.
When I start vacationing some, Count on me seeing all that my own Country has first before I go converting to a ghey peso, euro, yen, etc. I loved every single place I've been out west...Oregon maybe takes the cake for it's diverse types of terrain and climate associated with each.
This was with my old kodak beater but I was behind a door and she was no more than 10 yds. from the viewfinder.

After seeing that snake I am reminded that I'm not a total conservationist....I will straight up kill any snake I see on sight. They are truly magnificent creatures none the less.
Trident,
If I appear a little nervous in that pic I was. That snake bit my friend twice before I picked it up. If you aren't nervous/tense and support their body there is a much lower chance of getting bit....key word...chance!;)

I notice it all the time in range pictures from guys who live in places like Idaho and WY....those people suck:D, give me a cpl. precision ARs and do not disturb until you have to bury me:cool:
Thanks everyone who has contributed and I hope to see a bunch more.
Here's an owl that was just hanging out on a sign at Buckskin Mountain State Park.

Now that is straight badass....I love Owls.
Really crazy thing is that everybody kinda refers to owls as being "night owls", yet the only time I ever see them is during the day.
Also size wise the breed of Owls on my property are dieseled up for sure. They are Barred owls and I could not get a better pic/video of exactly the way they look and sound then this clip. They are some vicious hunters for sure.

Badass....are these anything like a Kamodo Dragon? Can you imagine a worse way to die than by have a Kamodo bite you in the thigh, while doing so it is injecting the most vial bacteria known to mankind into your bloodstream. Then here is the kicker...a pack of Komodo's surrounds you and watches and waits with the specific intent of consuming your entire body for dinner once you expire or become weak enough to no longer fend off their attacks.
Templar, great pics...I wish I had a pic I took of a beautiful monster Wolf Spider w. what looked like a million babies on her back. I need to try and find a good locale around my home to snap some cool insects...haven't tried it yet w. the camera.
Ok, I decided to cheat in order to provide this thread with some more wildlife porn:) I setup my first game camera last night but didn't catch any deer or similar animals....crazy thing is that while I set it up last night, I jumped about 5-6 deer that were chilling where I ended placing the game cam. bkb...what game cam you using, I am jealous to see those pics as I want to see exactly that in a day or two when I check the cam I put out.
Those dear are extremely healthy looking..nice thick bodies on them. Does your cam have the IR flash adjustable? I think if you could turn the flash up just a tad, the images would be spot on.

Stepped out of the shop today and looked at my side yard. There, sitting on the ground at about 100yds away was a red tailed hawk. It was sitting on top of something, but couldn't really tell what it was.
So I quickly ran inside, grabbed my camera and telephoto lens. I walked to within 75yds and snapped a few pics. As I advanced, it took off (leaving what it was standing on).
When I got to the spot, the dead creature was a rabbit.
I have two hawks (mating pair?) that live on my 10 acre field (not a mouse to be found), but was wondering why they were all the way up in my yard. Then it occured to me that their normal hunting spot is flooded out so they had to move up to the house area to find something to eat.
Later on today, the Hawk came back and grabbed the rabbit.

ssracer...easily among the finest photographing on this site and again your images make my own perceptions in real life seem vanilla. The images are full of vibrant life and color. I also am a fan whatever the photography term of more glossy shots as well.

Alabama has some beautiful places, some great places to paddle. Don't be jealous, get out there and do it. You can rent a boat and the little gear you need for day trips almost anywhere. I got into paddling to help recover from a traumatic brain injury 15 years ago. For a couple of years I couldn't walk but I could sit and I paddled. At least tried to. Got a lot of scars to prove it, I was very uncoordinated and frequently lost control of the boat and crashed into the bushes. I crashed into a couple of hornets nests too. They move their nest to just above the water in hot weather. OUCH!

That's wonderful to hear about how paddling has helped out with your recovery. Traumatic brain injury is still largely an unknown science according to my sister who is a trauma surgeon. I actually took 2 summer semesters of Kayaking at Auburn...Kayaking 1, and Kayaking 2, and I seriously got 4hrs. towards my requirements for electives:cool:
I'm just a huge bass fisherman and Offshore fisherman to ever sell out to the paddle:D That beautiful hum of a Diesel engine aboard a Bertram 43' w. teak fighting deck, or the sheer spine tingling speed of a Ranger/Skeeter bass boat w. a Yamaha burning wide open....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4Jtbs1PNik is too damn irresistible.
The buzz that a high performance bass boat yields in damn near unbeatable....I find myself forgetting to fish for large segments of days on the lake.

Most recent, taken with a nice camera but without lighting or any set up because of the nature of the incident. I heard something fall last Friday, and when I went over to pick it up a flying squirrel ran out from under it like its ass was on fire. In the course of the chase it scurried up a lamp which played hell with the flash, but he was courteous enough to stand still long enough for me to take a quick photo. Never thought about how hard it would be to run a camera with leather gloves on before!
At any rate not long after this picture he jumped into a toilet, so I fished him out and got him outside alright. Luckily it was still over 50 degrees, so he probably made it!

Ive wanted to see a flying squirrel since I was kid when one of my teachers told me she put them in her shirt pocket:D...he's neat.
Cat man for life...second cat pic is awesome. I'm partial to American Shorthair types, rather than exotic breed types. I do think my next pal whenever the time comes will be a more exotic breed like a true American Shorthair silver tabby...or a Bengal as well. I adopted my first cat(family really did when I was very young) and he passed a cpl. yrs. back at the age of 23:eek: Last Xmas I was given another adoption kitten that is really an exceptional feline and he is only about 16-18 months old so hopefully it will be a long, long time til I will be looking for that new pal.
If a cat has a huge domain, both indoor and outdoor with lots of freedom's and decisions to make...plus a ton of hands on attention, you usually can end up with the most personable, loving, and smart pet one can find.
Yeah, it was the first time I ever saw one, at least knowingly. It was definitely smaller than I thought it would be--I'd say its body was under 3" long. I'm still not sure how it got in, but it could have probably gotten in 50 different ways as small as it is.
The cats I have are half wild. I have them because I'm in the woods, and it's the best way to keep rodents away from the house (OK, rodents that can't glide). I'd hang out with them more, but I'm allergic to all animals with fur, and they trigger asthma attacks easily. It is amazing how different the cats are though--some are quite friendly and others I can't get within 5' of unless I'm putting out food (or they want thanked for hunting). That one calico cat has caught red squirrels before--she's quite a hunter. But they have several acres to roam and I know they use it.
