Does the polymer in the mag base plates act the same as the guns frame when stippled. I think I have a nice heat/tip/texture combo working, I just don't want to start poking my frame and have it act differently to the same technique.

I would also like to take a bit of the hump out of the grip. Is it feasable to heat up the rear of the frame and press/form it until it attains the desired shape? I am not talking about much. Just reduce it by 3/16" or so. I have read all about the filling then sanding, I have only read one or two spotty threads about heating then forming the backstrap. Obviously, you have to take extreme care not to warp the rest of the frame.

Thanks in advance-

That is exactly the way Lane Owens of Cold Bore Custom did the grip reduction on my Glock 23:

I don't know the particulars but I know he heated the backstrap and reshaped it to remove the hump, there was no filling and sanding. He did a fantastic job. I like it so much I have had him do the same job on all my Glocks.

I did a review of his grip work a while back here:

From viewing your other thread it does look like he did some filling and sanding of the backstrap. The void between the backstrap and the magazine well is clearly filled with a polymer.

Looks great though. Very clean finishing, and it almost looks factory.

I heated and re-formed my 19 with no issues. The key seems to be using a small heat source so you don't soften up the rest of the frame. You won't get anywhere near the same amount of reduction, but it's great if a little dab will do ya. What I liked was that I turned grip "depth" into grip "width" and got a little palm swell out of the deal.

My mag baseplates seemed a bit softer, so your technique might change for the frame. I ended up losing the mag texture in the end because I didn't really get any benefit from it, and it was added PITA to do all the mags. The best mod for me was cutting the side of the mag well. It's much more functional than stippling the baseplates, IMO.

Make sure you sand off the factory texture before you stipple the frame, also.

Ugly, but highly functional...

Sorry, I was not entirely clear. I meant to say he didn't fill in the void and then sand off the hump. He heated and reformed the backstrap to remove the hump, then filled in the void to make a nice little mag well.

The finger grooves were sanded off and textured.

I know this is a little off topic, but do you know if Surefire's DG switch for an X300 light will work with an undercut trigger guard mod done by Cold Bore Custom?

not from doing a reduction, but be careful with 3rd gens, I have seen a little bit of heat cause the very thin area above the thumb shelf cave in a little bit and cause extremely tight magwell and no more drop free mags. I was able to fix it to drop newer gen mags free, but older (still considered "Drop free) need a shake or tug.

It did for me. I stippled the baseplates of all 3 of my G19 and both of my G17 mags. The only difference for me was in the care taken because the area to stipple is fairly narrow and you don't really want to roll over the edge with a hot point. 2 of my G19 mags now have +2 baseplates/extenders (a generic no name brand that I've had no issues with...so far) and those reacted the same as well.

Turn around was super quick, about a week or so. I had done:

Grip Reduction package
Finger Hump removal
Undercut triggerguard

I did a grip reduction by using a heat gun on the backstrap of a Gen 3 G19. I mostly just got rid of the hump. That's easy enough to do....to do a further reduction by that method is tricky I think. Once you get the backstrap soft enough, go gently....
Also, I wound up swelling the magwell. To fix it, I applied skateboard tape to the back of a magazine, then ran it back and forth in the magwell about 100 times. Mags drop free again.
The end product came out really well, but it took me a lot of time and trial and error.

Fast forward a couple months, and I'm trying it again on a G20. Leaving an old crappy 10 rd preban magazine in place seems to help prevent the magwell from swelling.
