Ive been lurking on here for sometime, lots of info on here

so Im building my first AR and im restricted by state laws. So i have to have a fixed stock or a pinned collasp. stock. And honestly i was thinking about going with a pinned magpul moe buttstock but it would just piss me the hell off and be a constant reminder of this states retarded law. I would go preban but i just dont have 500 or more dollars to throw at just a stripped lower.

I dont know if im just an idiot, but I dont really care for the look of a fixed A1 or A2 stock on a carbine. I would be fine for comfort since I have to put the collaspeable stock all the way out for it to be comfortable to shoot.

any suggestions

Honestly, I do think it looks a litttle bit strange(the fixed stock on a carbine). That, and I like the rubber on the back of the MOE, compared to the metal endplate on the regular trapdoor style stock... I feel like the MOE stays in place on my shoulder better, so my preference isn't merely cosmetic.
I know it's almost a tease for a pinned collapsable, but... that's what I'd personally go with if I was unfortunate enough to live in a state :suicide: that thinks there are such things as evil guns. That's just my $0.02

You could always go with an ACE skeleton stock if they look better to you.

Have you looked at the Vltor Rifle Modstock? It's not adjustable, and has a different look than the traditional stock.

There's also the Sully stock, which alot of people like.

Both are excellent options.

Quite a few ppl run carbines with fixed A1 or A2 stocks. You can't beat the stability of a fixed stock and the rifle buffer system is less fussy.

I actually like the way the A2 stock looks. I ran one and loved it.

Friend of mine once told me that he like the fixed stock because if he has to hit someone with it it has substance. Makes sense. I wouldn't have one.. Like you I don't like the look of em...

Apologies for not knowing the name, but mag pul makes a heck of the solid stock in the multi-postition config. It can be a formidable stock to get slapped with. got to get the right one!!

As far as looks, the cool factor makes no difference to me if I am comfortable with it and shoot accurately - BUT yeah, it looks unusual to those of use that have been around the AR platform.

Kinda like wearing 1960's polyester.

It's appropriate.

See below - that's a S&W M&P15R upper on an M&P lower with fixed stock. The proportions look a little off but it handles just fine for me. YMMV, of course.

If I had to, I'd go pinned as well, I don't love the look of the massive fixed ones, personally. Lucky for me, in VA, I probably won't have to make that choice, unless they bring it Federal (again).

If you want a stock that is fixed, but smaller than the A1/A2, get a sully stock.

I might still end up gettin one of those. Theyre just a mini version. shortened

Another option would be the Magpul PRS. The Sully's do look cool too.

Can the Sully stocks be made to work with a receiver end plate sling mount like the MagPul ASAP?

Now those things are ugly as hell. Heavy too from the reviews I've read. I thought they were A1 length?

If I were in your shoes I'd go with a pinned magpul stock.

Go with a pinned collapsible. This is what I decided to do with mine. The advantage with that is that you can pin it in the position you prefer the most. With a fixed length, you're stuck with that length. Granted, you won't be able to adjust your buttstock on the fly, but you can still set it to the length that you prefer before pinning it. It also affords you the ability to turn it back into a regular collapsible buttstock should you move to another state.

Thats a good question. The reciever tube on a fixed stock is different. Unless they make a reciever tube I am unaware of then no, I dont think. Usually when I see a fixed stock with sling, its either got a 3 point or a mount to the side. 3 points get tangled from what I hear. Ive never used one

I think that would steer me away from the Sully stock.

But with a pinned stock, what happens if you have to mortar your rifle? Will it really damage/break the buffer tube if the stock is extended? Will it fracture the fixed pin/adjustment pin?

while putting together my most recent build I considered using a fixed stock with a BCM middy upper. I even put it together and left it that way for a few days to consider it. Eventually it went with a collapsible stock using a Vltor buttstock.

My next build, just picked up a Spikes Tactical lower :p, will be a fixed stock with a lightweight middy upper.

Having carried a couple of fixed-stock HK's and an AUG I am a bit fan of the Sully stock in a fixed-stock application. Personally, pinned stocks were always a bit silly to me.

Also, I'm pretty sure that the new Troy sling mount will fit as the Sully has the same profile behind the receiver. As soon as it is out, I'm ordering one.

to me it just looks lopsided

if i went wit a little longer barrel then it would balance out. maybe i should build a midlength?

I knew a guy that had a middy with Cav arms fixed stock. Good looking gun IMHO

Carbine length is a little strange looking.

Looks good. Wonder if it would work with a Cav Arms lower. I've been wanting to get one of their lowers from DSG Arms just for fun but didn't want to have to change where my slings attach.

how is the quality of cav arm's stuff, thought about getting the fat handguards and maybe a stock from them

I'd go with the Sully, I like them, and will probably go with one for my next build.

Some of the Members here posted some great options for you. So I am not going to post any because I would second most of theirs as a possibility. If I lived in a State where I could not own a m4 stock and had to go with the a2...I would take the A2 over the M4 FIXED any day..But that is just me and at the end of the day you have to be happy with it.

No point on having a M4 stock if it won't do what it was designed to do. I was always able to get great cheek well with the A2. It always felt rock solid.
