Are any of those mid-length gas systems?

That 6940 is awesome for guys who like working on their own guns! :suicide:

Fortunately no....

Fortunately no....

Why would that be good? How is one mid-length so much to ask for?

The mid length system is non-standard and would require big $ changes at Colt for which they would never recoup their costs.

Which one of those is the SCW?

Is the 6940P the piston version? (Formerly the Colt 1020.)

I thought Colt—in a smart move—canned this idea after they built the prototypes.

You've had it easy; it's time for a challenge.

I'd bet dollars to donuts that Colt will be entering a piston gun into the Carbine replacment competition.

Absolutely they will! The Army has made it clear that if they are to replace the M4 the replacement must be significantly better and must be a piston gun.
Based on some of the Army's concerns I'm thinking a mid length gas system could help Colt sure up its contract.

I think the one we're all waiting for is the CM901. I can think of a few configs Colt could build that would sell extremely well. The 6720 is one of them....you have to get it through Clyde Armory right now. They can make a Mid-length 16 inch gov't profile that would sell well. They could also make a series of 14.5" guns with permanently pinned FHs that would sell well. They can make an extreme lightweight carbine that would be like a 6940 except use a 14.5" pencil barrel with an A2X pinned flash hider. I think all these would be great sellers.

Is there an AR10 on that list?

I do not see the 6520. What's up with it?

funny...Colt offered a piston gun in late 60 and in 2005 (SCAR competition) and nobody wanted it

I think that the fixed carry handle is going the way of the dodo.

Well I guess that makes sense, "Well make mono-lithic uppers but not change the barrel, drill a whole and make a gas tube two more inches." To me I just think a carbine gas system on any thing 14.5"/16" is like having a 4dr truck with no back seat.

I think Colt may be throwing a piston gun into the improved carbine program. They have a lower that can change between 5.56x45 to 7.62x51. Ambi controls, and that kind of modularity would be interesting. It is all in the video. It is all speculation, but the timing is pretty interesting.

Still don't see the Army moving to completely different weapons system, so the new Colt makes sense. Unless someone develops a caseless ammo that is affordable and can be fired by electronic impulses instead of mechanically we will continue using this system. It may be an 50 year old system but it works and we are conitnuing to squeeze more and more potential out of it. Plus the Army is asking for funds for an order of 19,406 new M4A1s in 2012.

We don't need a new "better" rifle... We need a "new" pistol... in .45acp!:D

Originally it seems that the fewer moving pats inherent in the DI system was of more interest than the keeping heat and fouling away from the BCG.

Seriously? Has there been an official statement from Colt regarding this or is it merely speculation? I've been eyeing a 6520 for awhile now so if this is true it looks like I need to be getting all of my ducks in a row.

Not an official statement from Colt, but it's not speculation either.

This will be great for prices in the AR market. It's gonna drop complete gun prices and regulate the rest of the market.

Colt's milking the M16 and M4 for all they're worth. If/when they're replaced, they sure as crap better do something, because their current offerings are dismal.

IMHO, the 6720 should be a regularly catalogued item. (I don't own one yet, but I like the concept.) :)

I still want a 14.5" lightweight midlength gas system with permanently attached flash hider with 6940 body for one piece system with 9.0" rail of course. I'd just add a TG stubby VFG, Aimpoint T-1, Surefire X300, Vickers non-padded sling, and this baby would be perfect for run and gun.

The 6520 is not in the 2011 catalog. The A2 does have its limitations on a modern carbine.

Also, the old 9mm RO635 and RO639 models with A1 carry handles are gone too. Replaced by the R0991 and R0992 which have KAC rails, and Matech BUIS

Though the Colt 6720 is a nice replacement, but it doesnt appear in the Colt 2011 catalog either.
