This is why US soldiers should be armed every time they are in uniform.

We may not choose to understand we are at war with Islam, but Islam understands they are at war with us.

Radical islam is a problem that must be confronted with outright violence.

I was stationed about 30 minutes from there at WAAF. Had some threats, and I know the Polizei busted up a couple Muslim rings in the area + the bigger one in Hamburg. Flew out of Frankfurt many times.

As far as being armed no way the Germans are going to let US mil out and about with guns unless its directly duty related.

If they did anything they would do escorts to the airport or some dumb shit like that.

One thing I didn't really realize until I got there was there is quite a bit of history of terrorist action against US mil personnel in Germany...especially in the 70's and 80's. There was some group that was pretty active, and several people stationed at WAAF were killed.

As noted this isn't the first time.

Baader Meinhoff / RAF

The the Libyans with the disco.

The reality is Germany can't protect our troops in country any more effectively than they can rescue Olympic athletes. So we either let them take the steps necessary to protect themselves or we bring them home.

I'm personally in favor of bring them home. We've footed the bill and carried the load for Europe's military defense long enough. Let them pay for it and do it for themselves.

With the money we save we could probably have socialized health care too.

Yep, the Ft. Hood shooting should have been at most a 2 casualty event (including the shooter).

I am on your side.

When we get hit with a nuke, a political leader will arise who will promise to do what is needed.

While I don't know all the circumstances under which the Americans were killed, I can say that I am glad that when we travel it is incognito.

I knew there was a reason we shouldn't have trusted Clinton and the UN about that "war" and its goals.

Yep. We should just keep on coddling Muslims though and make sure we don't hurt their feelings.

I'd say it would take a little more than outright violence. Only a reasonable people will respond to violence. With the whackjobs that populate radical Islam, it would take an unprecedented and spectacular level of violence that would turn their bowels to water at the mere thought of it. Death and dismemberment hold no horror for these savages. You would need to go so far beyond the mere destruction of their flesh that they'd rather commit suicide on the spot than suffer the fate you would visit upon them.

The American people simply don't have the stomach for what it would take to eradicate the threat of radical Islam. Whether we fail to understand our enemy or refuse to see his ante and raise him is irrelevant at this point. :(

Discipline and control are far more important in the military than the lives of individual soldiers. To allow individual troops the means and authority to defend themselves in non-combat zones wouldn't be in line with military command and control objectives. To the brass, it would be like giving hand grenades and flame throwers to orangutans. :(
