View Full Version : What style handguard is this?

Just picked up a BCM M4. I haven't used/shot this platform since my M16 A2 in the Army during the 80s so pardon my ignorance.

I'd like to mount a forward grip and a bi-pod. It looks like there are bayonet lug bi-pods though. Do I need a Picatinny rail to mount a grip or is one made that would work with my handguards?

I tried to search but without knowing the proper terminology, I had no luck.

TIA

M4 handguards. If you're wanting to install a forward grip or bipod I'd highly suggest getting a free float rail/tube. A grip other than a Magpul AFG might pull off the entire bottom handguard if you run it hard.

That's a standard Carbine handguard, a mini version of the M16A2 handguards.

You don't want to mount a forward grip to the standard handguards. Yes, I know that people sell the adapters for them, but you'll risk tearing it up as you really don't have much support there.

You'e not going to have a lot of room to mount a foregrip and a bipod on there if you are going to use a 7" carbine rail.

Avoid the temptation to go super cheap and mount a UTG rail on there, it's airsoft quality.

Knights Armament, LaRue, Troy, Daniel Defense, Midwest Tactical...all make top shelf rails that will handle mounting what you're asking about. You can get a longer rail that goes around the front sight tower so give you more real estate.

Thanks for the replies.

I did a google search with your suggestions and I came up with this:
UTG M4 Free Float Carbine Length Quad Rail. (http://www.defensetacticalarms.com/UTG_M4_Free_Float_Carbine_Length_Quad_Rail_System_p/mnt-hg416sf.htm)

This is basically what you mean? I did see 2 piece too.

And to save room, how are the bayonet lug bi-pods?
Bi-pod. (http://www.combathunting.com/AR_15_M_16_M4-M16_AR15_Bayonet_Lug_Bipod_Quick_Mount_System.html)

Thanks again.

kaltesherz beat me to it

The utg is the one to avoid. You instead probably want something like

http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=1077
(link removed, see below)

for example. Daniel Defense makes top notch products. The LITE rails are very popular but are a bit more and require you to change the barrel nut, etc. Something like the EZ Car or one of the Omega's would allow you do something similar but with less modification to the host weapon. I think the EZ Car one is just a simple direct replacement for you handgaurds

EDIT: Oops the LITE rail I linked you to is actual the one for the AR10 but you get the general idea I think

Here's one for the AR15.

Just one example though, obviously they have lots of lengths depending on how much rail you want/need (determined by accessories or you hand position)
