Then you definitely want to check out the Starz series Camelot starting April 1.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1672189/

Starz has recently been producing excellent historical dramas such as Spartacus. While not quite as polished as HBOs "Rome" nor as sophisticated as Showtime's "The Tudors", they hold up on their own merit.

Camelot probably has better production values than Spartacus and the first episode shows a very well developed storyline. Eva Green makes for an incredible Morgan and IMO surpasses even Helen Mirren in the same role. I personally preferred Katrine Boorman in the role of Igrayne, but Claire Forlani does a good job.

All in all, looks like they are going to do a good job with it.

I was a huge fan, first R-rated movie my dad took me too.

Do you know if it's based on Sir Malory's "Le Morte d'Arthur" like Excalibur was?

way too much ridiculously unnecessary sex and nudity in all these. it's pretty irritating, because if it wasn't for trying to manipulate me into watching, i probably would. they seem like otherwise well done shows.

Pssst, people had sex back then.

And in depictions of ancient Rome (Rome, Sparticus, etc.) it is actually central to the storyline. It is also an important theme in The Tudors as well.

Now there is a school of thought that says "they all used to take a shit but we don't feel the need to show that too" (although even Spartacus had this element) and that may be true. But these are also adult dramas and most of us don't feel the need to be protected from bare boobs and bad words.

Now if it isn't your cup of tea, I completely understand. But for myself I prefer a more accurate representation of events and I think most of these are pretty close. For me the only problem is when it seems that is ALL they have to offer, for example I just couldn't get into Deadwood at all. Seems like nudity and profanity is all that it had to offer, there was no interesting storyline or well developed characters.

I actually don't know. I've only seen episode one and I've never read Malory. My first real introduction to the story was Excalibur.

I watched Spartacus: Gods of the Arena on Netflix and thought it had better production than Blood in the Sand.

If anything, HBO's Rome was toned way down from how life was back then.

I enjoyed the Spartacus storyline, but honestly, I could have down with a lot less of the "300" effects.

Yeah, that was the only thing that hurt it. Thankfully Lucy Lawless was there to save the day.

The one I'm really waiting on is The Borgias on Showtime. I have a feeling that is gonna be interesting. Lots of material there.

I get the feeling that season 2 of B&S will be more like Gods of the arena.

it's not about being "protected from bare boobs and bad words." every mother ****er in this bitch knows bad words are inextricable from my vocabulary, and bare boobs happen to be two of my most favorite things.

and as far as being central to the storyline- negative. showing actresses' tits, asses, and/or 'giners lends nothing to the story line. if nudity were necessary for understanding history, all our history books would be loaded with hardcore porn. your position is that it would somehow detract from the story if you didn't get to see titties... how did we ever enjoy the art of acting before the 60s?

not my intent to turn your thread into another nudity v. prudism thread, so those are my final thoughts. you have the last word.

It's central to the storyline as much as violence in the arena in that it depicts the culture the way it actually was. The graphic depictions of both are what I'm talking about.

We could imply the same ideas with "scantily clad" actresses and "bloodless" depictions of arena combat, in fact that was how it was done in the 60s. But the graphic depictions of both are of course more realistic.

It's a lot like The Sopranos vs. The Godfather. They both tell a similar story in a similar way. But one is a lot closer to the reality of things than the other. Some people prefer one over the other and vice versa.

I tend to prefer the "closer to reality" depictions so long as storyline and content don't exist at the expense of such depictions.

The movie Excalibur is available for streaming online at Netflix. I think I'll watch it again this weekend.

My other nitpick with the Spartacus series is that, to the best of my knowledge, and I had a couple semesters of Roman history, there were no Maoris in the Mediterranean world.

That is a pretty severe nitpick.

If I had to raise my second issue nitpick (after the 300 style goofy effects) it would be that the series is an absolute sausage fest at times complete with schlong and homos kissing.

Cultural inaccuracies would be about #40 on my list.

Now I can't decide if my favorite Helen Mirren movie is Excalibur or Caligula.

But good lord what an interesting woman.

She was of course very naked in Caligula.

And she remains interesting today.
