View Full Version : Is it "bad" to shoot 55gr with 1:7 barrel?
My new-to-me M4 has a 14.5" barrel with 1:7 twist.. I'm being suggested to only shoot heavier rounds and not the lighter 55gr..... they made it sounded like it a cardinal rule :(
Is it because I will lose accuracy/consistency? Is there any safety reason in it? BTW, as for application for this rfile, it is not "target shoot" for accuracy, mostly for plinking within 100 yd.
Please shed light. Thank you!
No cardinal rule there. 55 grain is just fine in a 1:7. The advantage of the 1:7 is that you CAN shoot heavier loads if you want/need to, but you certainly don't have to. Whoever told you that is full of it.
There is no safety issue shooting 55gr bullets out of a 1:7" barrel. Go for it.

55GR works just fine. Nothing to worry about.
Thank you SIRS!!!!!!!!! :D
The faster twist rate has more to do with the overall length of the bullet and not the weight. 77grn bullets are long.
"Safety" is not an issue, and accuracy will be fine. Most memebers here shoot 55grn rounds out of thier 1/7 barrels for the majority of thier training because it's cheap.
Go buy a case of XM193 and enjoy.
FINALLY...
I can get into an ABSURD THREAD before IRAQGUNZ LOCKS IT!!!
HA HA!!!!
You're good to go and have more options with a 1/7 twist.
Is it bad to use the SEARCH FUNCTION to answer a simple question like this?
