Texturing the grip, paint, and finish

This is the part where it all comes together. The first part of the process involves texturing the stock with a marine tex epoxy, then doing a coat of alumihide II.

Step 1: Begin by lightly sanding the entire stock. I used a foam sanding sponge and 400 grit sand paper.

Step 2: once the stock is sanded you need to tape it off for the epoxy. You can see the pattern I used in the pictures, but this is more of a user preference. So you can do whatever fits your shooting style/needs. You will also need to cover up the front flush cups with some masking tape.

Step 3: Mix the Marine tex and begin to apply the epoxy. You only have to do a skim coat, imagine spreading peanut butter on bread. Use some kind of dowel rod or tongue depressor for the application. Try to keep a consistent coat on the areas you plan to texture. The 2oz on marine tex is more than enough to do the entire rifle.

Step 4: After about 45 minuets the epoxy should begin to tack up. Keep in mind this isn’t an exact time, the drying rate will depend on temperature and humidity in your area, so I would check it every 10 minuets. You can check to see if it is tacky by taking a sandwich bad and dabbing the stock to create a texture, it is tacky if it leaves little bumps behind from the bag. If it self levels it still needs more time to “tack up”. Once it is tacky take the bag and create a texture effect on the epoxied areas of the stock.

Step 5: Once you have textured the stock, let it sit for about 1-2 hours. At that point you are going to want to take off all the masking tape. Once the masking tape is off you will notice a well-defined line where you removed it. Wet your finger and blend the edge of textured area into the rest of the stock. After this step you will need to let the epoxy sit for the recommended amount of time to dry.

Step 6: Once the epoxy is completely take a hand file and remove the peaks of the large texture bumps. There was only 4-5 on this stock. You could be done at this point if you just want to leave it black in color. Since I am painting the stock I took some 400 grit sandpaper and roughed up the surface. Once that was done I prepped it for paint by plugging up all the flush cups with paper towel. Then I covered the rail , barrel channel, and action area with painters tape.

Step 7: Paint. Nothing to really to explain here, I used Aluma-Hide II. It seems to hold up really well and in my experience is a lot easier to use than duracoat. I did pull the paper towel out of the flush cups about 20 min after painting so they didn't dry in the cups and gun them up.

After the paint dried I assembled the rifle and this is the result:

Awesome! I'm attaching where I epoxied my grip area. I wanted to build up the palm swell, so I used inexpensive epoxy putty over sanded and lightly drilled area. Pressed into it with plastic over my hand to fit. After that cured, I went over it with MarineTex, similar to you, except I let it tack up more and flicked the tongue depressor until tall sharp peaks. After curing, I knocked them down with a file, then sandpaper. Probably not what you'd want all over a foreend, but for the grip it made an amazing tactile swell, and I feel locked into position.

Oh yeah, custom cheek pad, too. ;)
