Just speaking of natural disasters and ignoring the human ones

The Indonesian Tsunami a few years ago probably ranks up there and the Kobe earthquake in 1995 they forecast will cost more than this and killed a lot of people too.

Then the Tokyo earthquake of 1923 killed upwards of 140,000

Then there are the Iranian earthquakes etc that were not so long ago.

Depends how you define it.

The 1923 quake had 150,000 dead, we aren't gonna see near that number. But this is the worst quake in recorded Japanese history (since they have been recording magnitude).

The Japanese are hard working and industrious folks. They'll bounce back from this, and have most of the damaged areas rebuilt long before parts of N'awlins are.....
