I possibly have a trade pending. I always ask around for an outside opinion before doing so incase Im being blinded by the new shiny toy.

My trade would be a lightly used Ruger MkIII 22/45 and 450 bucks to get a LNIB (40 rounds fired) S&W 629.

I have always wanted a S&W 29/629 since shooting my friends years ago. Never got one because of their price.

I d like the Ruger a lot and will buy another if I end up trading.

What do you say?

I think that trade is pretty close to the value of a brand new 629. If you intend on a different model 22/45 at all it could be well worth it.

I would not do it. I don't know much about the 629's but I think that with $650 you can find a used one.

It depends on the 629 and what you plan to do with it.

Cash talks in a down economy. It's not hard to find a 629 for $650-ish with a little looking, so this trade doesn't look so good from here. Also, a Ruger 22 auto is cheap to shoot and more people can enjoy it, so it's more useful in the broader scheme than any 44.

The 629 variant you get also matters. Any 629, even an early one, will be fine with moderate loads. Get a newer 629 with the Endurance Package if you plan to shoot hot loads. Beware the 629 Mountain Gun--only a seasoned 44 shooter who handloads will really get the most out of it. Also, I'd avoid any Smith with the internal lock. S&W is likely to phase it out soon, and the value of a gun that has it will drop like a rock when they do.

Would have been a winner with a minty 29 P&R...;)

To me, it looks like you're taking a small hit on your side to do the deal.

Well the deal fell through. He was looking for a hunter model Ruger.

No hard statement from Smith, but they've started selling J-frames without it. With any luck, this will spread to their bigger revolvers.

Gross. I just bought a brand new S&W 29 for a woods gun, in case I run in to (another) bear within 20' of me. Would have preferred no lock, but a legacy 29 in any kind of decent shape costs more than a brand new one, at least on Gun Broker. Maybe if I swap my dad's .41 magnum for my .44 magnum he won't notice...
