View Full Version : Kentucky Training Group- Introduction! POST HERE FIRST!
Welcome all M4C members to the Kentucky Regional Training Group (KTG)! This group is meant to gather any M4C members to train! Everyone is welcomed to join! As well, anyone from out of state is more than welcomed to join!
By joining this group, all I ask is:
1. Observe the 4 Rules of Firearm Safety AT ALL TIMES.
2. Have a sling or holster for you firearm and be familiar with it.
3. Have quality firearm to which you have familiarized yourself with.
4. Train with what you will most likely use in your situation. Be REALISTIC.
Keep in mind we will run this training group as any firearms course would. We follow the 4 Rules of Firearms Safety at ALL times. The range will always be "hot", meaning weapons will have a round in the chamber. When weapons are not in use, weapons will be on safe (if possible), all muzzles are to be pointed down, pistols in holsters.
This group will NOT be shooting on a static range. We will be utilizing 180 degrees of fire and 360 degrees of movement. This is to mimic real life situation as closely as possible
So this thread is to serve to as a base of M4C member wishing to train together in the commonwealth. All M4C members of other states are more than welcomed to join!
Before posting, please take the time to observe the rules and purpose of the group. Then please introduce yourself! Tell us a little about what you would like to train with and level of experience (carbine, shotgun, pistol) and where in KY you are from. By all means, tell as many people about this group as you like! So long they observe rules and follow the guidelines, we welcome all! The more members, the better!
I'll start off!
I'm Alvin, a college student at the University of Kentucky. Currently, I'm a intern at an accounting firm and as far I know, the youngest Concealed Carry Instructor in Kentucky. I have been to a few carbine courses over the years, so I have some time behind the gun. I do most of my training in central Kentucky. I started this thread to network with other people in Kentucky that are interested in training, discussing tactics and gear considerations, who treats their guns as tools and not as beauty queens. As you can tell, I don't care that my rifle gets beats up. I like anything unorthodox, if it works, it works.
So with out further ado, please post in this thread first and I will keep track of the members on this post!

Awesome, I've been waiting for this to show up.
I go by the name of Turtle. I live near Louisville and in the Criminal Justice program at JCC. Currently working for a security company to pay the bills until i get my degree. Been in KY for about 5.5 years, bought my first gun(XDm) last year and my second(DD) a few weeks back. No CCW yet, but I should stop being lazy and get that taken care of. Not much experience with shooting, it has just been an expensive hobby for me. Getting a bit more serious now and want to invest in training and hopefully the networking that comes with it.
Hey Alvin. Its Aaron, figured I would use the same username on both sites.
You can add me to this list as well.
Got cha down Aaron! Now we just need more people to see this thread :p
Indeed. It took me a while to find it and I knew it was here.

Hey guys, I'm a 15 year Law Enforcement veteran in Central KY, currently a midnight shift patrol Sgt. I'm always interested in any additional training opportunities or any opportunity to meet up and compare notes on what works and what doesn't in real world applications. Never pass up an opportunity to learn.

I would like to join, I am a Senior at EKU studying Homeland Security, and a full time Security Guard, Just out of curiosity where would we get together. I am at a loss for good places to shoot.

Oh yeah, I like to shoot rifles, shotguns, and pistols.
Ah, good to see there are some generating interest. On TOS (I know, but there are so many members!) I have started a training group and there are considerably more members. It would be wise to just go ahead and combine these two group for the time being.
The next tentative date is May 21st. Here is the link to the Kentucky Hometown Training group (http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=8&f=27&t=443450&page=1)
I didn't realize you posted here as well. I replied on my thread in the site questions /comments.
Also, welcome Shreckp. I'm in the same boat, college student, security at night, not too familiar with shooting locations. Hopefully we can get something together and have a meeting once every couple months or so and maybe some occasional class-like settings.

I also know a few people who would be willing to come out and shoot with us, but they are not on this site

Feel free to bring them! Everyone is welcomed
For those who haven't noticed, the original post has been updated with a link to the most recent plans for a get together.
To add my opinion, I vote for the Knob Creek option. The possibility of inaccessible roads is what throws me off. Best vehicle I own would be worthless in muddy backwood trails. Knob Creek is likely on paved roads. The admission price would be less than a wrecker to pull my car out. Add to it more local shopping and eating would help.
The accessibly issue at the farm relates to the farm lane itself. The roads to get there are well maintained. It is the last 300 hundred or so yards of driving into the farm that get tricky for cars if it has been raining a lot.
It takes a lot of high water before the quick route in gets submerged ( farm can still be driven to on roads, you just jump from a 10 or so minute drive to 30 some minute drive). Unfortunately the last time we met up the backwater was over the road, though still passable to trucks and SUVs. Knob creek was flooded at the time as well.
It may be a good idea to look for a 3rd possible location not located in the Ohio River's flood plane if the weather does not start to improve. I may have a line on a farm we could use but I will have to get a hold of a friend of mine to see if he will be around at that time.
As far as the location goes I can go either way. I had been planning to head out of town for a couple days the weekend before the meet up but that fell through so I can afford to make the trip if we go with Knob Creek.
Update: There will be a low light shoot if we select the Maysville farm!
Too bad the timing isn't a bit better, or I'd come out to join y'all. I'm in Lexington until tomorrow (job interview), and my carry gun is looking at me like I should go put it to use. I won't be back (assuming I get the job) for a couple months.

Okay, that doesn't sound as bad as the post on the other site made it seem. Is there a town nearby? If we all decided to take a midday break, are there decent restaurants around?
Finding a third option is a good idea as well. What kind of distances are the members on the other site from the farm? I'm near Louisville so I'm looking at a 2 hour drive.

Damn, I wish I could join on the 21st, but I have plans already:(

Knob Creek is most likely flooded right now with all of the rain we have been receiving. Not a bad location though when everything dries out.
Everything is flooded right now. Unless weather turns around our best option is to head away from the river.
Okay, that doesn't sound as bad as the post on the other site made it seem. Is there a town nearby? If we all decided to take a midday break, are there decent restaurants around?

The farm is a 10 to 15 minute drive from Maysville which a has a solid selection of places to eat. There is also a BBQ place in Tollesboro that is good and is about the same drive time. I would generally recommend bringing something to eat for midday. Especially if we do the night shoot since I would imagine we would break for dinner late afternoon while we wait for it to get dark.
I think most of the guys who came last time were from around Lexington so they are looking at about the same drive either way. There are a couple guys from the Maysville area who are looking into coming and one guy from Carter county looking into coming.
If needs be I could look into putting up a couple folks the night before if the drive is longer than they would like right before shooting. I know if we end up going to knob creek I'll be driving down the night before and getting a hotel so I don't have to get up insanely early for the drive.
I also got a hold of my friend who has built a range out at his place to see if he would be in during this shoot. Unfortunately he will still be on the barge then. Hopefully in the future we can schedule a meeting when he is off.
If May 21 is the date, I believe the Vickers class is going on at KCR. Not sure how that affects space.
If things keep going the way they have been we will not have any issues with High water at the farm. The back water is still up but is barely outside the creek banks right now. It has returned to the stage were all it does is improve the fishing. We may still have to work around the lane into the farm itself being muddy. Worst comes to worst we can have people park away from the farm and transport them and their gear in with people with trucks or SUVs.
We have been lucky here this time around. Lots of rain here but not as much rain upriver. It is rain upriver that is bad to cause high water issues like we had at the last shoot. The rain here makes high water worse down stream.
Update in the link to TOS.
Yes, the vickers class does conflict. They reserved the private range much before we could. Looks like the Maysville is where we will be shooting!
Hooray Low light shooting!
Well that's a bummer. I will have to wait until closer to time to give a definite yes or no, my cars wrecked and should head to the shop soon, and my backup car isn't reliable.
If I can make it, how low of light are we talking? I don't have a weapon mounted light yet. Probably my next purchase after my ccw.
Low light as in a mounted light is mandatory. This is meant to push the shooter out of the their comfort zone. Really, every fighting/defensive carbine should have a sling, a red dot and a light.
I'm having to buy I light for this one myself.
Maybe we could swap back and forth some if you need to. I usually run pistol more than carbine anyway.
I'm not too worried about a light. I have a decent light, just need to find a mount that works. I'm thinking some cheapy one should do for now. It is an off size, right between 7/8 and 1 inch. I'm not too concerned about a light because I work nights so I'm only around my toys during the day time. Eventually I do plan on investing in a quality mounted light for both rifle and pistol. A RDS is definitely not going to happen any time soon though, unless I buy a knock off or cheap used.
My biggest concern will be getting rifle ammo. I might have 150 left. Pistol I've got plenty.
Me and my girlfriend will come if I can get everything together. We also need lights for our rifles. If we don't get them then we will just leave early.
Since there isn't anything in Indiana, especially Northern Indiana, I'd be down for the occasional trip to do some training with you fella's.
Name is Jon. Shoot 3gun, do the occasional drills with some Cop friends here.
Luckily I got a rental car until they decide to fix or total my car, so if I still have it I am probably in. It's an SUV so I'm good. Just need to come up on some ammunition and find a deal on a light.
You can find lots of deals on Streamlight TLR-1s for around the 100.00 mark. I have been very pleased with the one I have on my pistol so I just bought a second one for my carbine.
I ordered both of mine off Amazon.
Gentlemen,
Update on the Link in the OP

I checked the other day and amazon seems to be in the $130 range new.
I can't remember where it was, but I found someone selling new for $99. I got my check from a photo shoot a couple weeks ago so I might pick one up. Will leave me enough to take my CCW class too.
Mine was touch over 100 but I had to buy from an outside vendor to get the strobing model that is brighter. The different vendors had a fair amount of difference in their prices.
Hey guys, I updated the Link in the OP. Check it out.
I will be bringing IPSC targets and a VTAC barricade. If anyone else can chip in, please do!

Better make it 13. I'm tagging along with TOS member 'beaterar'.
If only y'all waited two weeks... I'm (finally) moving to the area right after Memorial Day, and will have nothing to do but work and shoot until my wife gets her license to practice squared away at the end of July. Any thoughts as to when the next event will be?
ETA: For clarification, I'll be OFP until the end of July when she moves out.
What part of the state are you coming to?
Not sure when the next event will be but I am always down to shoot.
I'll be working in Winchester, and living a bit closer to Lexington. My wife nixed the idea of buying a bit of land outside of Fayette County, so no personal range for me...yet.
I'm headed to the area next week for some house hunting action, but no shooting this trip, unless Work Boss tells me to ditch Home Boss and go with him.

See you folks in the morning.
I'm still debating on whether or not I will be going. I still got the rental truck but I don't get off work until 6am and don't have my gear ready. Not sure I could make it out there before 10 or 11 am.
No problem man, we will take a break at 12 or 1 and be in town for lunch. You can always meet up with us then!

Everyone that came had a great time, and we definitely figured out what needed to be worked on... Night shooting, for one. :D
Predator made an appearance in the fields during the night shooting, and we have his glowy blood on the ground to prove it.
I look forward to a second go-around.

Just saw the thread and figured I'd add my pics.
If you're in the area I'd definitely recommend making it out to one of these. It's a hell of a good time and you get to test/stress yourself and your setup more than a static range ever could.
I, for example, found my sling mount lacking.

Looks like you guys had a great time...
I hope to make it the next time, I need a bit of forewarning so I can make sure I am off work, I may not be able to make it until after July, as I have a need to set aside ammo for a RskTkr Consulting class in WV
Also if anyone is interested in a Fighting Rifle class On the 9-10th of July, and would like to go, I would be interested in possibly having someone ride with me there, it is 7.5 hrs away so it is going to be a long boring drive.
Here is the best place to find the description,

Hey guys, im from Booneville, KY. Im very interested in getting together to do some shooting. Ive taken a few courses from Tactical Response, a Magpul Dynamics tactical carbine 1 course, and a Vickers Carbine 1 course. I train monthly with a group of LEO's, contractors, and ex-military. I would love to find a group to learn new things from, or maybe even teach a few things to. Let me know something about a training day, what I will need, if I can bring a friend or 2, when, and where? I wanna sling some lead.

Hey guys,
Just recently discovered M4C and then eventually this group. I'm a former Marine (pogue) and have been a cop for almost 5 years. I've been in patrol for all of it and a bike officer for the last 2+ years. I was just recently accepted onto one of our SWAT entry teams and am awaiting a school date. I'd love to join any training events you may set up.
Thanks
anybody still geting togather??? thread looks kind of dead.
We are still around it has just been quite for a while during winter.
We have been discussing having another meet up soon. Kind of hoping things dry out up here. The farm we shoot at can be hard to get non- 4X4s into when it is really muddy. Unfortunately it has been muddy in my neck of the woods for the past couple months.
ok i live in lexington. you will have to let me know the next time every one is geting togather

Stay tuned everybody. It's getting warmer and we will plan something soon!

Hey all, We're having a training session on May 5th. Check out the thread posted here! (http://m4carbine.net/showthread.php?p=1275578#post1275578)
Hey guys, I am interested in the group. I'm from Breathitt Co and have been shooting many years. I served in Army from 2001-2006 I served 2 tours in Iraq. I was a 19Delta(Cav Scout) and was attached to 3rd ID we saw our share of combat. I was injured in early 2006 and was given medical discharge. I currently am a part time Deputy Sheriff and work on the side for my uncle who owns a small security company, mainly secuirty for local coal compaies . I have a BS from EKU in Criminal Justice and would love to go on to law school if funds become available. I would be interested in carbine, pistol or shotgun classes. Thanks guys.

Hey guys, just getting out of the army. Anyway, I have a few combat tours walking them mountains. My main disciplines are rifle, carbine, pistol. Don't really have access to machine guns now. Anyways,I love to teach, and love to train.
It's been awhile since anyone's been through here it seems....does this thread/group get any activity anymore?

I guess not. What's up?
I'm in Louisville and would definitely be interested. The only place to have a shoot around here would be Knob Creek, but I'm sure there would be some better choices around the state.

Louisville as well
This thread has been inactive for a while so not sure if the group is still a thing. I’d be interested in training if it is though. I’m in Danville.
