Hi guys,

I am planning my first AR build, and wanted to get some feedback from experienced AR hounds. First of all, I want this AR to be primarily for self-defense. I envision shooting distances usually within 50 feet, but possibly out to 100 yards. I also want a lightweight and reliable rifle that may be suitable for some carbine classes and if it ever happens, get outta dodge SHTF.

I believe I want a 16" middy. I may possibly change out flash suppressors/muzzle breaks and may at some point try a can. For now, I'll just stick with the A2 birdcage.

The upper I am after is a BCM 16" middy with no handguard, a fixed FSB, and a BCM standard charging handle and chromed BCG:

I did not select the upper with the Cold Hammer Forged barrel - does that matter?

For the lower I'm looking at a Spikes tactical stripped lower and LPK from AIM Surplus:

http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?item=XSTLPK&name=Spike's+Tactical+AR15+Lower+Receiver+Parts+Kit&groupid=53

For the stock/handguard/grip etc there is this Magpul MOE combo from DSG:
http://dsgarms.com/ProductInfo/MGMIDMOEBLK.aspx

and the rear backup sight is Magpul MBUS2 from DSG:
http://dsgarms.com/ProductInfo/MAG248BLK.aspx

Costs look to be:
Complete upper: $399
BCG/Charging handle: $135
Stripped lower/LPK/FFL: $160
Stock/handguard/etc: $120
Rear Sight: $58
Total: $872

Can I get more or a better deal by buying a complete rifle? Will different parts work better for me given what I'm after?

Thanks,
Tommato

CHF can be useful if you plan on shooting the gun a lot. If you're just a casual user, which is sounds like you will be, the regular 4150 barrel is more than enough.

Why not get a BCM complete lower, too? Contact GR Tactical about setting up a lower just how you want it.

MBUS is definitely usable but I prefer my KAC metal irons. Use what will work for you.

That is a great setup. I wouldn't worry about a hammer forged barrel. The light weight barrel profile is handy.

Consider adding a weapon light and learning how to use it properly if this rifle will fill any self-defense role. Doesn't have to be fancy, a simple SureFire G2/6P LED in VLTOR mount will do.

I would suggest buying a complete BCM lower to go with the upper too. Have you looked through different rear sights? I don't care for the MBUS either, I think you can do better for around the same money. I'd look at a DD rear. But it is YOUR gun so get what you want. The set up you've listed sounds good to go. It will serve you well just ad lube, mags and ammo.

After you've shot it and get to know it consider a good sling, light and optic.

I would pass on anything from Spikes Tactical... yea their lowers are as good as any other but you'd be representing the short bus riders of the gun manufacturing community.

Instead of a spikes lower I'd order a BCM lower from G&R or an LMT complete lower from Rainier Arms. Both of these companies probably have everything you want in stock so you could save on shipping.

You'll need a sling too, VCAS or VTAC. I have the standard BCM 16" middy, and unless you plan on shooting 30,000+ rounds through it, the BFH is not necessary. I would also recommend the Cosmetic Blem lowers from G & R too, I like mine. I used the Troy rear Battle Sight, but would have gotten the BCM version if it had been available at the time.

Then save up for an Aimpoint on a Larue mount.
