Let me start off by saying that I apologize in advance as I may have left things out, as it has been two weeks since the class. I tried to get everything down that night but most likely left out some details. Also, this was my first Carbine course and thus my first AAR.

Day 1: Chris and Steve started out with a safety briefing, and emergency medical plan. We introduced ourselves and moved into discussion of zero and carbine maintenance. Then we went prone and zero'd our carbines and worked on NPOA and prone. After our rifles were zero'd Chris and Steve covered standing, grip placement, and trigger reset. Bore to sight offset, trigger reset and accuracy standards were also covered and drilled. Search/assess was covered as well as shot placement. Kneeling unsupported, supported, and Monica were covered and then emergency reloads. Chris finished out the day by timing our reload times in the charging handle "slingshot," bolt release "slap," and bolt release "thumb."

Day 2: Chris and Steve reviewed what we did the day before then set up a steel target at 50 yards for the Modified Navy Qual. Chris timed us doing the Navy Qual several times. The hour or so was devoted to handgun, where grip, reloads and transitions were covered. I borrowed a Glock 23(?) and holster from a classmate (Thanks!). Then we moved on to shooting around barrier and cover. Cover vs Concealment was also explained. Class 1, 2, and 3 malfunction clearance was taught. We practiced a "battlefield pickup" drill which was both fun and extremely informative, especially when Chris and Steve switched my AR out for an AK (priceless WTF moment..)

Gear: I ran a 16" BCM Midlength with Magpul MOE handguards and Spikes lower w/ CTR. I used a troy two-point sling IWC attachment point next to the delta ring. For optics I ran a Aimpoint CompM2 with a craptacular Matech BUIS. I shot brown bear 55 gr. and used PMAGs with one BCM USGI mag. I had only one FTF which was fault for insufficiently lubing the rifle. I oiled up with some SLIP 2000 and was good to go for the rest of the class. I plan on ditching the Troy two point for a VCAS sling and pickup a KAC 300m buis since the matech would deploy itself and chewed the shit outta my upper. For load bearing gear I ran two ar15 mag shingles through a TT riggers belt, simple but it worked alright. I plan to upgrade to a BROKOS or ATS warbelt as funds allow..

Overall the class was amazing. We had only 5 students in the class and Chris and Steve were able to give give lots of personal attention. Steve and Chris would ask us throughout the weekend two questions 1. Are you having fun? 2. Are you learning something? and I can honestly say that both were answered with a yes all weekend long. I learned how to fight with a rifle, instead of just shooting it. Chris and Steve kept a educational but humorous atmosphere all weekend long. They do a great job of pointing your mistakes out (I had many..) and helping you improve. The class moved at a perfect pace, and the instruction built on itself, reenforcing previous curriculum. I honestly can't say anything bad about the experience other than I wish I could train every weekend! I had a great time with my dad and the other students and look forward to training with Defensive concepts NC again!
