Show me what amazing things humans can do. Please no stupid human tricks.

Here is my contribution to open the thread. Ive been in lots of pools, and my ears ache if I go down below 8-10Ft. Very few humans can say they dived down to the depths. Make sure you select 1080 and fullscreen....

On 23 January 1960, the Swiss-designed, Italian-built bathyscaphe Trieste, acquired by the U.S. Navy, descended to the ocean floor in the trench manned by Jacques Piccard (who co-designed the submersible along with his father, Auguste Piccard) and USN Lieutenant Don Walsh. The descent took almost five hours and the two men spent barely twenty minutes on the ocean floor before undertaking the three-hour-and-fifteen-minute ascent. Their early departure from the ocean floor was due to their concern over a crack in the window caused by the intense pressure of their descent, and also because their landing on the sea bed had stirred up a cloud of silt which reduced visibility to zero and showed no sign of settling. They measured the depth as 10,916 m (35,814 ft).

No one has gone that deep since and probably won't ever again.

seen this before :) we used to do stuff like this on Maui a lot off Lanai in the underwater cliffs and such was a scuba instructor for 15 years a a few dive guys are big time free divers also
not this guys class of course :) but still pretty good
prefer whats called Constant Weight class current record is just over 120 meters my best is just shy of 50 meters
they have a class called no limits where you can be pulled down by a sled and can be lifted by air bag but still understand partial pressures and such the depths they hit are INSANE current world record 214 meters !!!!

a good chunk of my life was dedicated to free diving ;)
nothing like going over 100 feet on your own power and lungs and cruising around for a few minutes :)

check out the old movie Big Blue :) its pretty good about some of the original free divers and Jacques Mayol

in a pool learn to equalize :) then no ear pain :)

You have my deepest (no pun intended) respect. A few years ago, my wife and I did the Molokini snorkeling boat tour while on Maui. After paddling around inside the crater for a while, the guide asked if some folks wanted to swim out and around the outside wall. When we swam out and over the crater lip, the water temp dropped, and the bottom just feel away into the dark blue, I about crapped my pants.

Guess I'm a shallow end of the pool kind of guy. And living in Montana, it's likely to stay that way.

I worked Molokini for about 5 years 6 days a week love that place always saw something new each dive the wall is pretty cool for sure watching the blue go down :)
The cool thing is lots of big creatures or blue water stuff comes through there more than the shore dive areas so whales & Ahi & other cool creatures used to love it when the manta ray would come through

As I recall, it was precisely the thought of some "big creature or blue water stuff" rising up out of the inky blue depths that generated the aforementioned crapping of pants sensation. :shout:

The diving talk brings me back to when I was a commercial diver. Before I went to school for it I had no idea the things that were possible underwater. Then I learned about saturation diving, and I was blown away. One of the instructors in my school was the Navy record holder for open water sat diving at one point at 1,010 feet. Of course, since then the record has been eclipsed by much deeper dives. Part of our curriculum was figuring out the reserve time for our bailout bottles at different depths. Using twin 80 bottles as a reserve, a sat diver at 1800 feet has about 3 minutes before he drains the bottles.

Here are some Youtube clips of saturation divers. Amazing stuff.

I love diving when I decided to do it for a living choices of working as a commercial on rigs with a bunch of other guys or work on a tourist boat on Maui with girls and bikinis :) wasn't hard to decide

But a ton of respect for commercial and sat divers

Honu, I'm not surprised you made the decision you did. Had I been in your shoes, I'd have done the same thing ;)

This thread has had me thinking about some of the other amazing things that I've heard about. I grew up reading about mountain climbers, especially some of the pioneers of the sport. Of all the mountains that intrigued me, I think the Eiger was the one that really grabbed my imagination. The stories of the men who tried to climb the North Face (Eigernordwand) were stories of human endurance and tragedy. The north face was also referred to as the Mordwand, owing to the deaths of dozens of climbers before the first summit.

One of the many stories of climbers on the wall was that of the Kurtz/Hinterstoisser climbing party. This was back in 1936 when mountain climbing was still very primitive compared to the gear and equipment used today. Andreas Hinterstoisser made a traverse that still ranks among the great mountaineering feats. Granted, the expedition ended in tragedy but that's another amazing story in itself.

The Hinterstoisser Traverse is still a key part to scaling the Eigernordwand today.

See also: Toni Kurtz and George Mallory for incredible stories of human endurance.

Would you believe that my two biggest fears growing up were deep water and heights? In dive gear, sharks will usually pass you by as you're making a lot of noise, putting up a lot of bubbles and you're about the same size. Not really easy prey.

Humboldt squid on the other hand...those scare the piss out of me. Dive gear or no, they're going to have at you if they want to.

Being born and raised on Oahu, and I must say that I don't swim and do beaches. For me, I "drowned" (but not really though it felt like it then) like 3 or 4 times. Have always been afraid of large bodies of water and such. Not to mention the "sea creatures" dwelling therein. . .

Hoploethos, Joe Kittinger is a personal hero of mine. He described that when he jumped from 102,800 ft that he had no sensation of falling and it was very quiet until he reached the troposphere. During the ascent for that jump, the pressurization in his right glove malfunctioned and his hand swelled to twice it's normal size. I believe he still holds the records for highest parachute jump and fastest speed by a human being in free fall.

Another video with him talking: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VdSeDqU3EY

Later on he would fly combat missions in Vietnam and is credited with a MiG-21 kill. Kittinger was eventually shot down and spent 11 months in the Hanoi Hilton where he was tortured until he was released in 1973.

An ultimate badass, imho.

Indeed,
as well as record for longest freefall.
All three feats never surpassed even to this day. Other's have tried numerous times but failed.

Agreed, dude is a BADASS all 150 lbs. no doubt. I particularly dig the footage of his crew member doing the classic American "birdie salute" after his jump. You can feel the moment.

Found the "Birdie Salute" on link below here @ the 6:00 mark.

Fabian Cancellara (aka Spartacus)

World Time Trial Champion (x6)
World Road Race Champion (x2)
1st Flanders
1st Paris Roubiax
Olympic TT Champion
7 Stages at the TDF

The thing that i find amazing about Cancellara is his ability to SUFFER. Thats all a TT is, how much pain can you stand for how long? Plus his ability to claw his way over mountains while weighing 180lbs (much more than the ordinary pro cyclist) His legs are pistons.
