I don't like Newt at all. Slimy SOB he lives up to his name, IMHO.

This just reaffirms my opinion...

there was a bunch of 'em... my favorite: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhmpsUMdTH8&feature=related

all the "opposites" in these videos happen to be very similar, in my mind: jackasses, one and all.

Newt is mostly running for President. Mostly.

Newt is very intelligent, an articulate speaker (as compared to the Soetero-in-Chief), and he says some things that I like.

On the other hand, Newt is a DC insider, prone to the dirty deals that we all hate, and he is in favor of amnesty for illegal aliens.

But I would prefer Newt to Romney or Huntsman.

But IMO Bachman is the best of the field.

i didn't think i could get any more disillusioned after the 08 election... and yet, i am.

the republicans cannot keep running these same moderate assholes. americans are moderates, but they don't want a moderate president. half of us want a cowboy, the other half want somebody who will bow to foreign presidents. there's no room for moderates.

i got into a friendly water cooler political debate with a client, of all people, before the '08 election... i said something to the effect that "i'd vote for obama before i'd vote for mccain- i can't stand a moderate." and i gotta tell you, i meant it. i didn't vote for either asshole, but if i had to, i probably would have voted for obama. <gasp> his politics couldn't be further from my ideals if he wore a swastika on his sleeve- but at least we knew who we were getting.

a big part of the problem- maybe the biggest- is that we let the media make the nominations. when have you ever seen a strong candidate pop up in the primaries? rarely- and when you have seen it, it's been nothing more than a showing. why? because the media won't hype him up. if they didn't pick him, they wont help him.

and **** newt.

I don't think 1/2 the country wants someone who will bow to foreign dictators.

I think the key issue here is perception. Someone with more or less conservative principles who is objectively a reasonable human being with a track record of accomplishment would probably do well. The problem is that objectively reasonable bit. Some people think that to be "reasonable" means bending over for the other side 1/2 the time. Still others are convinced that it's defined by the people in the press and how they regard somebody...as if they are dispassionate observers of fact.

The best hope is someone who has strong conservative principles and who carries them out in office as much as possible and who doesn't really concern himself/herself with appealing to x group or y group or with what Chris Matthews might say about them. Someone who is articulate enough to make the argument for hard choices and savvy enough to know how to get the legislation codifying the hard choices into law. Someone who understands when he should lead, and when he should listen...strong and principled but without hubris.

That sort of individual exists...but getting people to pay attention to that sort of calm, even, rational individual especially at this early of a stage in the election cycle is difficult. To run for president anymore you just about need a gimmick, and that's ridiculous because government by gimmick doesn't work.

Newt has, without question, some good ideas...he's also got a track record of making some silly choices and trying to play the appeal to group X or Y game. He panders to try and make himself look "reasonable" to the Chris Matthews of the world (witness the appearance in the commercials with Pelosi) without seeming to realize that's not possible. I just don't think he's presidential material. He's certainly got a lot more depth to him than other famous names like the Huckabees or Palins, but I don't think he'd fare much better in a general election against the stacked deck of coverage.

I can't really stand either side.

Either get taxed to death and regulated to death by the left or have our country turned into a anti-terrorist police state by idiots trying to pander to illegal aliens so the left doesn't call them racists.

traditionally, the republicans "pander" to illegals because they're good for business. traditionally, the lefter side has been anti-immigration because immigrants compete with American labor force.

i think the same is still true for the repubs... it's the left that's forgotten that they are supposed to be watching out for American labor interests. if the lefties hadn't lost the concept of nationality, they'd do a lot better.

People have a hard time understanding the democrats today aren't the JFK's who went toe to toe with the commies and believed in low taxes. Now the democrats are commies.

Newt can kiss my white ass after his remarks about atheists.

I'm thinking: The Realist Party. You have to be realistic, and logical to be a member.

There is no electoral support for a moderate party.

One part of the country wants to take us totally socialist /communist.

Another part of the country wants to get back to bare basic constitutional government, cut the size of the fed govt by 75%, balance the budget, no more welfare state, no more nanny state, get the government out of our lives.

The Repub party is dying. Either it gets taken over by true constiutionalists / conservatives, or it will be dead like the Whigs.

The Dem party today is really the Socialist party. The Dem party of JKF no longer exists.
