I just received word that my nephew, who is a Sgt. with the 101st Airborne infantry, was WIA by an IED. The only word so far is head trauma.

Prayers appreciated.

Prayers sent. Fortunately, the modern Kevlar helmet has done a great job of preventing life-threatening head injuries. Let's hope that he just got a mild concussion.

Thank you all for your replies. The updated information at this time is that he suffered a severe double concussion. I dont know what a "double" concussion is, but it could have been alot worse.

His unit is scheduled to leave theater on April 5th.

I think they may be talking about a coup-contrecoup injury which is an injury to the head when the initial blow is to one part of the head and the brain strikes that part of the skull then bounces back to the opposite side and hits the other side of the skull. There is only one blow, but the brain bounces inside the head, striking twice.

Make sure he gets thoroughly checked out when he gets back. I recieved a "concussion" from an IED that turned out to be TBI. Getting medical help for it after you get out when its not properly diagnosed can be a pain in the ass.
