ok yea i have built my first ar piece by piece
the only thing i have yet to purchase is my barrel and gas block
i have rifle length magpul handgaurd and i would like to get a good 18 inch barrel with a 1/9 twist that is threaded and a low profile gas block
any suggestions ???
and again this is my first build so my knowledge of the ar parts is not quite up to par yet

Good luck finding a decent 1/9 barrel. Especially in 18" they tend to be twisted faster.

If you intend to run the rifle-length Magpul MOE, you'll want a gas block with front sight, not a low-pro gas block. The MOE isn't a free-float handguard and thus isn't stable enough to mount a front sight on.

ok maybe not a low profile but i did see in a picture called gear scout they had this handgaurd and there was a flip up front site this is what i meant sorry for the confusion this is the link to the pic.

You are probably looking for something like this. I had one on my first 6.8SPC AR, and it worked well.

Vltor and PRI also make their own versions, although more expensive.

Of course, to use Magpul MOE handguards, you will also have to use one of these.

I shot the picture and wrote that piece, if I can answer anything about that let me know.

Sounds like you already know about needing the handguard cap. If you are going to use a front sight, remember that you can't mount one on the MOE handguard. If you want to go with no front sight, just go with a decent low profile gas block like a Vltor.

Make sure the triangle end cap fits tightly on your barrel.

Pricey.
Not pinned.
Not ugly.

If you get a gas block, you will need to get a railed one and then a separate gas block mounted sight, because, as everyone has mentioned, you can't mount a front sight on an MOE handguard. Since you want to use an MOE, your best options are either a gas block/flip up sight or the standard FSB.

rambo,

I recommend that you reconsider and look at a 1/7 rather than 1/9. It would also help if you kind of outlined what it is that you and what the intended purpose of your AR is.

Maybe you should do some reading on a dissipator style upper. Since you're deadset on a rifle length handguard.

why the 1/7 ? i prefer smaller grain sized bullets which from my understanding usually shoot better out of a 1/9 ?
and hunting/ just shooting around is the purpose of this rifle

I'm sorry, I posted and should have gone into more detail. The gas block and front sight base are two different pieces. The barrel is a midlength gas system, so the functional gas block is under the handguards. The front sight can also be used as a gas block, but not with this barrel configuration. In this case, the front sight gas block combo is only functioning as a folding front sight.

To find an 18", with rifle gas, in a quality pipe, you will more often see it in stainless with a 1/8 twist.
