View Full Version : MOA Challenge

I had a thought last night. I'm a big target guy and don't really care about the gun as long as it can provide the targets you want. One of the common measuring sticks in precision rifles is MOA accuracy so why not have a little internal challenge much like the "2000 round challenge" our pistols brothers have.

I was thinking of an informal match where I make MOA targets on 8.5"x11" paper where you're given 2 rounds at every stage in 100 yard increments out to 800 yards. The first round is worth the range you're shooting at so 100 yards equals 1 point, 500 yards equals 5 points, etc. The second shot is worth half. I found it was hard to tell the shots apart so just score them the same.

I think this will be a nice test of equipment and shooter to not only make MOA hits, but to hit what you're aiming at. The best group in the world isn't any good if it's not in the right place.

If it works we could even do a periodic informal challenge right here on M4.

Your thoughts?

This is what I have in mind so far. The 600-800 yard target is obviously a 6", 7", and an 8" target in one to save paper and printing. There is a total of 36 first round points possible and 18 second round points possible for a total of 54 points. See above. Total possible points are 72.

I have a feeling this is going to be harder than I'm expecting and I think it's going to be quite hard!

Lets keep the rules short and simple.

Shoot the right target at the right range.

Use whatever you want and all methods are welcome and in fact encouraged. It'd be fun to see how a tuned bench gun would do against say hunting and varmint rigs.

Spotters and flags are fine.

Please record the rifle and load data so we can see how it compares. If you can toss on your dope that would be nice to see the trajectory of your loads.

That's all I've got.

I was also thinking that we could have two different centerfire classes for those who don't have access to 800 yards. One could go out to 500 and the other 800.

I'm also wondering how I could use these with my .22 trainer. I'm thinking 50, 75, 100, 125, and 150 on the the 100-500 target.

Could be fun. I'm expecting this to be humbling!

Well I gave this a try with my 22 trainer today as I couldn't get out to the longer stuff today. I was a little worried that 50, 75, 100, 125, and 150 was too close, but apparently not!

2 things I noticed are I'll just score each round at every range the same as otherwise you'll never know which one was first and which followed and I was too lazy to walk to the target between every round and didn't want to get my spotter out.

I also think the scoring for the 22 stuff needs to be the same value as the centerfire so 50 counts at 1 point, 75 counts as 2... all the way to 150 will count as 5 points/hit.

I was shooting an Anschutz 64 MPR with Leupold 4.5-14x40 scope and Wolf Match ammo.

Come ups were

50 - 0
75 - 3.75
100 - 7.75
125 - 12
150 - 17

Wind was blustery and peaking at around 10 mph from 4 o'clock.

Long shot... why aren't you shooting in our rimfire competition?

Anyway, on topic... you need to add fields for conditions. My point being, in a 1-5mph wind, with some good light... I'd likely clean that damn thing every time I shoot it. Add another 5mph of wind, and it'll probably make me feel like I should never hold a rifle again.

See what I'm sayin? Hell, today I could just barely stay on a 12" plate.

orkan,

Good points. I wasn't really taking my time yesterday and you can see my zero wasn't perfect (or even close) to begin with, but at 125 and 150 the conditions deteriorated quickly. Let me see what I can do.

I'd really like to participate in this, but my local range maxes out at 100 yards. Any ideas?

Shoot small targets!

1 round per dot (http://www.primalrights.com/images/targets/1round.pdf)

If you can put all your rounds inside those dots at 100yds you are doing quite well. It's called a dot drill. After you get to where you can clean that target... put a time limit on it. When you can do it under that time, lower the time limit. :)

Thanks for the target. I'm going to have to use a scope because there is no way I can see those dots with irons at 100 yards.

Seems like a pretty strait forward assesment of shooter and gear. I will give it a run on my next class during KD. I'll post the results when complete. Always looking for new ideas for shooing challenges. Believe it or not shooting steel over and over on UKD courses gets old.
