View Full Version : Does this barrel look like it has more wear than 100rnds?

Just bought a barrel that was listed as having less than 100rnds through it. This looks like it has a lot more IMO. It doesn't help that the barrel looks like it was re-coated "gray" so I'm not seeing the bolt carrier impact marks on it. I can try and get a better picture if it will help.

Can you check the throat area for wear?

No, I have no way to check.

get a bore light, stick it in the muzzle and look at the rifling right in front of the chamber...it should look brand new with sharp edges with only 100 rounds.

if it has pitting and gator skin, you have a problem.

I know this sounds primative but I slugged my Mosin Nagant barrel with a lead weight (can just as well use a bullet) and measured the diameters with a micrometer to determine the wear on the grooves and lands. If you feel there is significant wear in this area, this might show it.

It's hard to tell, but the rifling "looks" the same throughout the barrel. But, it does have what look like pit's on the side's of the lands.

is the barrel clean...pull a boresnake through it and look again.

The rifling with significant rounds down the tube will almost always look a little rougher in the throat / lead area.
