I want to register my 870P and put a 14" barrel on it. Occasionally I've seen a 14" factory barrel listed on Gunbroker. Can you buy these barrels or are you forced to cut down your own once you've gotten your stamp?

Remington sells 14" barrels to LE agencies. Call and check if they will sell them to you with the proper paper work. If you have one cut down the major expense if going to be having the front sight base reinstalled.

Call Hans Vang at VangComp www.vangcompsystems.com .

I've made some of mine, but Vang gets my vote for best to purchase.

I like Vang's work. Though now with the what "flite control" wads with buckshot you're getting really tight patterns with the LEO Horandy, Winchester etc... loads. Though what a Vang barrel has going for it is it will give a tight pattern with simple over the counter run of the mill buckshot? I am correct? Thanks guys.

You are correct that the Vang Comp will give much tighter patterns with the run of the mill loads. The porting on the VCS will also reduce the muzzel flash, rise, and recoil. The Federal LE 132 shoots great from mine and the recoil is very low with the VCS. In my opinion from the results that I have observed it shoots tighter out of the Vang barrels. I hyave not measured pattern size but it looks tighter.

CDNN Investments in TX had the Remington 14" barrels in their catalog a few years ago. I looked on their Web site, but didn't find them. If you strike out elsewhere, you might give them a call.

How does one go about registering their shotgun, allowing the use of a 14" barrel?

Thanks.

On a Form 1 just like a short barreled rifle but this will be a short barreled shotgun.

2 Form 1s (same one in duplicate each with the CLEOs signature, passport photos of yourself), 2 completed fingerprint cards, 1 certificate of compliance, and a check for $200........If you go the trust route or LLC/Corp route you won't need the CLEO signatures, passport photos nor fingerprint cards.

I'd take a look a the NFA (National Firearms Act) sections both here and at the AR Forun:

http://www.ar15.com/forums/board.html?b=6

An additional step is that you will need to have the receiver engraved to BATFE standards with the name, city, & state of the maker, basically you. There are several outfits that do it, and if you have a NFA manufacturer near by, he may be able to do it or send you in the right direction to have it done.

A tip I read the other day is to get the engraving done before the NFA paperwork is approved, as there is no special issues in shipping your shotgun receiver before it becomes an NFA item. You may need their approval to ship it off for engraving after it has been entered on their registry; BATFE can tell you best about that.

You can also buy an existing SBS on a Form 4.

I don't know that Remington would be enthusiastic about selling you a 14" barrel, but there are places that will if you have an approved Form 1 or 4. I think that CDNN Investments has advertised them before.

Good luck!

The BATFE form is a Form 5, which I think is optional when you send a gun in for repair.

New Frontier Armory has the complete 870P 14" for $426. Then ad $200 for the tax stamp and a pretty good deal.

Form 5 is for tax exempt transfers. Govt entities use form 5's.
