It might be faster and cheaper to just buy a new one then send it away for shortening.

Hogue sells short 870 stocks w/ 12"LOP, as does Speedfeed with a 13". Thread below has a bit of information.

If its a wood stock, and you're handy, take a look at this video from Midway USA on shortening stocks, you might be able to do it yourself.

I'd vote on swapping to--that's what I did--Speedfeed IV-S

AI&P tactical is a reputable Remington smith--he's very knowledgable and helpful.

It's a good video, but less than half the battle. Grinding the recoil pad is a chore in and of itself.

But, as I recently discovered, you can spend about $100 in tooling to set yourself up with a cheap bench belt & disk sander that will allow you to grind the pads and true the stock yourself without spending 17 hours sanding.

I have shortened a couple of speedfeed IVs stocks to just behind the sling swivel hole on the stock. As others have said unless you already have the tools, the time, and the patience, it may be better to buy a new stock.

Keep an eye on Remingtons Country Store parts for the 870 or on their Parts Close Out.

I picked up a new longer stock for my son's youth 20ga 870 last year for $20 with pad. Did have to install a swivel stud however.

Another option is to get the new Mesa Tactical pistol gripped reduced LOP Urbino stock. I will be trying one out as a replacement to my Speed Feed reduced LOP "regular" stock.

A factory youth stock may work depending how short you need to go.
