View Full Version : I hate the sling points on my UBR...

So I did something about it.

I use two point slings on all my AR type weapon. Front connection point near the barrel nut on the left side, rear point at the back of the receiver inline with the RE.
Like so:
Noveske end plate

or Tango Down PR-4.

Well that presented a problem on the Magpul UBR since the only options for QD points at the front of the stock are left and right. Being a righty, I moved the cup the the right side of the stock and just ran the sling under the front of the UBR. This worked out fine for awhile but was less than ideal. Maybe I'm just picky...

So with an extra QD cup, some steel plate and some ½" round stock I whipped up a quick & dirty inline QD point. Obviously, with machine shop capabilities this would look a lot prettier, but it works and is secure. It slides in the left side QD cup hole, and is held in place by the QD cup & original button head cap screw from the right side.

The UBR will collapse to its # 2 position with the sling in, and the # 1 position with the sling removed. I run my UBR in the #3 position.

Work was done with a drill press, large vise and a MIG welder.

so when are you going to start taking orders? :D

The biggest fail for me with the UBR sling cups is the lack of a rotation limiter.

I'm sure you could sell them. It looks fine to me. Great job man.

Great, great idea. I tend to run my UBR fully-closed, so it's not an option for me.

Agreed. Seems to me though that based on the design it wouldn't be difficult to fashion a rotation limited sling cup. I might have to try that.

You gotta love American Ingenuity! Nice solution to a issue which has frustrated UBR owners since the stock was released.

You said you like the PR-4 how is the UBR's cups any different?

While not rotation limited, the PR-4 has a qd cup inline with the RE, so it's where I want it and it can't rotate due to the RE.

I agree with Chadbag - let us know how you wish to be paid, and when you have some made.

I have a UBR, and this would be perfect for it.

That is a great design you made. Many ubr owners would love to have this.

This is not on your website, unless I am really blind. I looked 20 minutes and could not find anything for the ubr.

kdcgrohl-

It looks like your lower has a sling socket built in, is that correct? I haven't seen that before, would you tell me about it? Thanks!

The category is there for an upcoming product. Earl's being a tease, but if it's typical IWC it'll be killer.

Dan, that's the current Knight's Armament SR-15 IWS E3 lower. If you want one, I suggest you jump now as they(the qd sockets) are being phased out since they're somewhat bothersome to safety operation.

IWC, great to hear you're working on it, I'm look forward to seeing it!

Here is my solution: I filled up the 360 slot in the UBR QD socket with JB Weld, and then after it cured, I used a diamond point grinding tip and dremeled out pockets.

Nice work. I simply removed the cups and added a loop (key ring for now) through the hole so I can use my MS2 sling.

I am waiting for the xzibit meme saying 'yo I heard you like quick detach sling points... So we added a quick detach to your quick detach so you can operate while you operate'. Or something like that.

Looks like a good solution.

I detest any of those setups with the giant receiver place with big dog ears sticking out and a heavy, noisy, sharp scissor clip dangling on it..... stuff just lurking there, waiting to get in the way. My last-ditch attempt to live with a single-point sling was this, fairly easy to do, just take it off, heat it up and bend it (and remove all the razor edges while it's out):

That looks pretty slick.

My beef with most of those end plate sling adapters is that the holes are too large for use with HK style clips. The hole should be no bigger than the loop on the front of an MP5 front sight.

Having big loops allows the sling clip to rotate until the weight of the weapon is sitting on the gate... leading to gate blowout. HK nailed it when they made the stamped steel guns... wish everyone else could follow along.
