A friend pointed me to this article (http://www.ehow.com/how-does_4925036_cayenne-pepper-stop-bleeding.html)the other day.

Is this legit?

I am in no way implying that this would be an alternative to the real deal, I know nothing about medicine, I just wanted to ask what you guys thought, if it was plausible or not.

(Many apologies if this is the wrong thread, it was a toss up between this one and the disaster preparedness thread.)

No. Cayenne has some minimal effect as an astringent in that it might cause some arteriolar vasoconstriction in a minor cut, but it has nothing to do with activating clotting factors. It's worth noting that the naturopathic crowd on the one hand touts capsaicin's hemostatic properties, such as they are, but also promotes the stuff as being good for dissolving or preventing blood clots.

Basically, a load of holistic horseshit. Spring for the QuikClot. At least it has some peer-reviewed science behind it.

And now with the new QC, that can't even claim the same thermogenic properties

Celox gauze. Works, and even a stressed out cop can use it under fire.
