Is this a fair argument and valid comparison? Why or why not?
Well, technically that's a logical fallacy called equivocation, No true Scotsman... It's those same sort of idiotic tactics that make anti gun people so unbelievable.
Also, most higher level courses are graded on a curve, so the entire crappy argument they are using is flawed from the gate.

Actually it isn't a bad analogy. Taxable income changes through various tax code provisions, government subsidies, etc.
