I'm posing the question like this as I believe it will provide for more objective, experience based, answers.

IE: You're telling me what scope would be best for you, rather than telling me what scope you think would be best for me.

----------------------------------------

I just gave you $5000.00, and you're going to buy the scope that you believe would be the absolute best for your shooting situation(s).

No NV scopes, and you gotta be able to mount the scope on the gun.

So if you wouldn't mind, please tell me:

1. Which scope you would buy.
2. Why you would buy that scope.
3. What type of shooting do you do: bench, critter, target, steel, mil, 0-300, 300-1K, etc.

Obviously, any other info you care to add is appreciated.

-----------------------------------------

Yes, I'm buying a bolt gun.

But this isn't about me; it's about what you think is the best scope for your particular shooting situation(s).

Thanks.

March Tactical 1-10x

NXS compact 2.5-10x24 NAVSPEC

Those pieces of glass would be going towards Recce/SPR type 5.56/.308.

1. Nikon 1-4
2. All I needed
3. Varmint Hunting

I would then take the extra cash and buy three more rifles and scopes and ammo...

I'll have to agree. I have nothing but magnified Leupold glass. One 1.5 x 5 Mk4 and two 3.5 x 10 Vx IIIs. Clear glass and holds zero. Don't have any experence with the 1 x 8. Wish I could afford it.

Leupold 1-8x. Why? It does everything. Seriously.

Hi everyone, long time lurker, first poster.

Just about a year ago, I bought my first bolt rifle, then shortly after, another, and then another.

Had a Steyr SSG 69 PIIK. ended up with a Swaro ZFM 6x42.
Had a Savage Stevens .243 and ended up with a World Class Tasco 3-9x40.
Had a AI AE .308 and ended up with a S&B 3-12x50 PMII.

And I can honestly say that each one of these rifle/scope combination gave me a LOT of pleasure. All of the above are sold, except for the S&B 3-12x50, which I am saving for my next rifle.

It's really tricky to find the right scope for that one particular rifle.

So, OP, which rifle are you going with? I know you said it's not about you, but still. :)

Right now.

1.) Schmidt & Bender Short Dot PM II 1.1-4X + CQB Reticle (5.56N 75 gr. calibrated rings) worn on a KAC 30mm one piece scope mount.

2.) Because it does everything.

3.) Home Defence, hunting, survival, mid range (600m) precision.

In a few months.

Schmidt & Bender Short Dot 1-8X + Mil Dot CC Reticle. 5.56N 75 gr. calibrated rings.

Same reasons, same situations.

I honestly haven't decided - but probably a Rem with a 20" barrel.

A what? Ain't no sucha thing.

5 kilobux into a scope will get you the best of the best. Except for a couple of HP calculators and a couple of canoe paddles I don't think I own the best of the best of anything. If I did it would be a Schmidt and Bender something or other. Just for the bragging rights.

I'm not sure how to interpret your post.... but anyways...

In my opinion, a 1-8x covers everything except the furthest limits of the 5.56 cartridge (600yds+). Again , in my opinion, a 1-8x is perfect for 99.9% of everything you'll be doing with an AR, military work included. There's plenty of 10x scopes out there, but few of them have the robustness and the durability of the Leupold or they start at a minimum power greater than 1x (as is the case with what I think comes close to otherwise being the best do-it-all AR optic at this point, the NF 2.5-10x24).

As you pointed out, the S&B 1-8x Shortdot is also a good choice, but unfortunately it seems to be vaporware at this point.

Hopefully Nightforce will come out with a 1-8x or a 1-10x, but that's just hopeful wishing at this point.

then, without giving consideration to which rifle it'll go on, I'd go with the Hensoldt 3-12x56 SSG-P... exactly $5,000:

No disappointment here - it's your money.

Say you need to make a precise shot at 600 yds.

How do you work your windage dope with that reticle?

(Still reading through the 38 search hits for "TA-33")

I don't have 600 yds. The ta33 would be for variety on a Carbine. I have a NF 2.5-10x32 for precision and I'm just learning the precision game
