I have been tasked to come up with a patrol rifle program at my department and also purchase the rifle for said program. I originally made the pitch for it to be just a personally owned program but the powers that be want at least one department owned rifle to be avalible to officers that do know personally own a AR.

I have been working on this for monthsand finally got it approved so now I need to get the department rifle asap so we can qualify and get them on the street. My problem is, I had my mind set on a BCM Middy mod 2 but I have been given a 4-8 week wait from BCM. I was going with that due to it coming with a rail and we would not need to purchase one. Any suggestions what/where to look? I'd personally just purchase a 6920 and get a Omega and be done with it but I have to play the game.

Colt LE6920 and don't look back.

It has name recognition among the powers that be, it's also the Gold Standard for AR carbines.

What is wrong with a 6920?

Perfect is the enemy of good enough. Especially for a beater/loaner/squad gun a 6920 is plenty good enough and available right now.

ETA: Templar beat me to it.

If you're at the ~$1000 price point or more, you have an impressive amount of options for an FET exempt gun.

Nothing wrong with a BCM at all, but Colts are available at a variety of vendors, and could be in your hands in a few days.

GT Distributors has the 6920 for $995 right now. Can't beat that with a stick.

(That might even be w/FET, so you may be able to get it cheaper still)

Colt 6920 or LMT's Patrol Carbine.

That is an excellent price on a 6920. May have to pick another one up. I would look no further than this. I'm not sure you can purchase a better rifle at that price.

Damn! The past six month, have seen the price on a LE6920 drop from $1200 to $1150 and recently to $1100. Under a $1000?!!! Man,that price is just sick! Anyone in the market for a carbine should not hesitate, repeat, NOT hesitate to jump on this deal. That price should be outlawed! :D

Get the 6920. You can talk them into an Omega rail later on. I'd kill to be able to carry my Colt in place of my issued Bushy.

That is excellent advice. You really don't need a rail. We use MOE handguards on out 6920s which makes mounting lights and slings easier.

Sure you can. There's Stag,Dpms,Doublestar,Bushmaster,Olympic,RRA, CMMG,Armalite, and BCC! Every AR-15 forum except this one knows that! :sarcastic:

Buy the Colt brother. BCM or LMT are good to go and what I own but I have to say that is an awesome price and you will not have to waste time and energy explaining why LMT and BCM are good to go. I personally get frustrated by that. I wish there was a chart or something to explain it. :sarcastic: I showed a local Chief my LMT SBR and he said yeah but is it as good as a DPMS or BushMaster?

Does BCM have any SBR's and or select fire guns in Stock? The transfer to a PD goes pretty quick.

I second the sbr route. My department uses Colt Commandos and I have grown quite fond of that shorter barrel especially for urban duty. It is ten times easier to clear homes and buildings with an 11.5 than a 16". We have flip up rear sights and use a Trijicon Reflex as out optic (no batteries). All in all its not a bad set up at all.

I would have to vote for the LE6920 as well. I actually just picked up a new one this morning from the previously linked company. The price was just to good to pass up.

$1079.00 for the 6720 from Clyde's is just as good as, or a better deal than the 6920 for $995.00

The 6720 comes with a flip-up rear sight and a pencil barrel which makes more sense than the M4 cuts on the 6920....unless your PD plans to mount M203A1's.

A 6920 with the Surefire M500 intergrated white light and handguards and the Aimpoint PRO is a cop proof bomb proof setup.

I would have no issues carrying that rifle setup on duty.

Colt was my second choice. BCM is what we got but BCM must be feeling the pinch of the AR craze and is back logged. I was told by my DD rep that we can be waiting as log as 6 months for DD barrels!

Yeah everything is outta stock. I would imagine the select fire stuff doesn't sell at the same speed but I might be wrong. An SBR with its shorter bbl is so much easier in and out if the cruiser and in buildings!

Even though a Colt wouldn't be my first personal choice, it is for a department.

Go with the standard.

We use Colts...as mentioned, they are fine for a Dept issued rifle. As far as the 11.5" short barrel goes...I strongly suggest you research what limits that imposes on you with the 55.6 ammo. Even in an urban area you cannot be sure everything will be under 50 meters. Take a look across any major intersection, parking lot etc.

To find a 100+ engagement distance in an urban or suburban area, you need only look at your schools, warehouses/factories, and shopping centers.

I'm not LEO or military and I just picked up a 6720 from Clyde's for $1079.00. That's a cash price though. They add 3% if you use a credit card (or at least they did for me).

I already have one 6920 but I swear that $995.00 price may be more than I can stand......

I don't want to thread jack but for the record my new 6720 came with carry handle sights not the Matec shown on Clyde's web site. That's cool because I was going to change it out anyway....

Clydes will work with you. Someone on the other site got them swapped with Troy's for just the difference. These things are made in very small quantities so changes aren't that hard. If you wanted to go with that model and are ordering a quantity I would bet they will go to great lengths to work with what you want.

Some will find that very desirable. I need a few more carbines. :D

Most flexible option for an agency would be buying the 6720 with an LT, DD, or LMT fixed BUIS as standard.

Yup I'm sure they would if I was un-happy (I'm not at all). They were very helpful when I called to order the weapon. I was planning to use either a carry handle sight or maybe one of the LMT's I have laying around anyway.

This was my first transaction with Clyde's but it probably won't be my last

My department uses m&p i think they are the 15T(not sure). But for some trainning they bring out old surplus A2 they got from the state. I know M&P does pretty good leo discounts. But finding a store that would give you the real discount is hard. I would suggest B and H gun rack out of FL or Lawmans out of NC they have always been good to me in the past for glocks and S&W. I could not tell you if the colts would be better than S&W that is a ? for somebody who knowns a bit more than me. But the price is generally a factor when buying equipemt for your department I have been pushing for some ARs for my positions for about a year now. with no luck &*^$&.

Another company you might want to look at is Accurate Armory. My department recently did a T&E of one of their LE Carbines and it is Good to Go with all the right parts, great customer service and a great price.

Accurate Armory is a fairly new company and doesn't yet have the brand name but who had heard of DD, BCM, LMT, Noveske, etc 5-10years ago. Give them a try you won't be disappointed.

Will once again second this. Our 100+ officer agency issues the 6520 and it has worked fantastically. Light, simple and reliable. All you need. If you are going to lean toward optics, then I would go with the 6720 followed by the 6920.

I carry a 6933 daily so if you were to go the SBR route, I would highly suggest that over the others mentioned above.

If you NEED a rail, why not a 6940?

If you can make do with an MOE handguard (and you prolly can), then 6920. Name rec is BIG in LEA's, and any admin will know (or pretend to recognize, for fear of mockery) the Colt brand name. This so happens to be the best time to buy a 6920 that I can remember. I've never seen a sub $1K price for a 6920. Ever.

Talk to colt's LEO program. Our department purchased 6520's with the surefire M500 hand guards for around $500 a rifle.

The colts so far have held up very well, even though they have been abused by most of the deputies that carry them. I have never been a huge fan of colt before, but they have held up very well (I think the first ones showed up about 5 years ago) and seem to still be very accurate.

If it were up to me I would have went with an A3 upper, but optics aren't provided and seen as a crutch, unless you are on the swat team...

When did they do that? Pardon my skepticism, but the M500 itself runs about $400 with 25% LE discount.

Trade-ins maybe? Does indeed sound odd...

Many years ago, ~$500-$600 M16 variants used to be available via GSA/1122 purchasing. Sans accessories.
