When I read the headline of this thread it just doesnt seem all that shocking as someone who has ridden the subway a lot... I hate crazy people.

ETA: Yeah that's special. Not a ton of cops in NY carry tasers from what I've seen. I know they have them, but except for demonstrations I've never seen many carrying.

At least they knew for sure he was not armed...having grown up in NYC, seen far worse on the subway. Once a women came onto the subway, took a piss right there on the spot, and wiped her cooch with a dollar bill and threw at it at me. Good times.

Believe it or not, naked people are statisticaly some of the more dangerous people to arrest.

Seemed like that went on for way too long, but that's just me. Are the transit police limited in what they can do to a person? Do they have to wait for Metro to get there or something?

As an aside... a subway story. Went to D.C. once with my wife for her job. Subways were really pretty clean, not what I expected, but the people there were fairly edgy. I was riding a couple of stops to go check out some museums and the car was full. I was sitting as they came to the next to last stop. A woman got on the car and stood near me. I stood up and said "Ma'am, would you like to sit down?" She stared at me with a curious look on her face and then said.. "You're not from around here... are you." I told her where I was from and we had a good laugh about manners and that she basically hadn't seen any (manners) in a long long time.

Speaking as someone who worked as a paramedic during the angel dust craze of the 70's, I can attest to that fact.

Sweaty naked guy spouting gibberish? No thanks. I'll wait for a pair of cops, both with 870's.

NYPD doesn't deem it's normal line officers worthy of the responsibility of carrying a taser on duty. Each precinct is assigned 2 tasers which are typically supposed to be carried by a patrol supervisor (two if there are 2 supervisors out which is very rare). Only ESU carries them on their person on a regular basis. As for transit police, they were merged into the NYPD in the 80's and were partly responsible for the switch over to Glock 19 9mm semis. If search for NYPD Lt. Michael Pigott, I'm sure you'll find out why the NYPD doesn't care to give line officers tasers. In this case, the transit officer was likely solo assigned to his post, had mace, and undoubtedly wanted some assistance before committing to a takedown, and unfortunately for transit, backup is going to be a while. Thankfully he had some help when he realized the crazy was attacking people, although too many appeared to be too busy pointing, filming and laughing to help.

makes me wonder if you were with little kids and the guy came running at you ?
protecting your 6 year old girl
fearing for your life and kids what the outcome would be in some states if he was shot ?

Do a search for Bernhardt Goetz, Manuel Falquez and Ron Dixon. The last 2 men were definitely in that situation and ended up being charged. Goetz was convicted in possession, Falquez pled guilty to attempted possession, and Dixon was forced to plead guilty to disorderly conduct since he attempted to register his firearm, which was legally acquired in Florida. Read the stories and backgrounds and you'll understand that NY doesn't care about protecting it's citizens but prefers political messages and protecting criminals who were "victims of the man." Brooklyn DA Hynes, in charge of the Dixon case, even received a letter suggesting that he was sending a message to citizens that protecting family nets you jail time while criminals can have free reign. An embarrassing side note to all these cases is the criminal history of the perps involved and their records following these shootings (except Falquez killed the man, holding a gun, who tried to get into his Mother's apartment). I assure you that he would have served very little time had he survived.

Figured I'd give a baseline for the liberal utopia. :D Goetz was not so clear cut considering how many "objective" media sources tried to paint him as a loon trying to live out his death wish fantasy on "poor innocent black youths." I'm no specialist on state gun laws, but I imagine many states requiring registration will throw the book at you given the chance. I'd love to hear what states that respect the 2nd amendment would do.

Absolutely true.

Naked = Someone experiencing a significant disconnect with reality. They're also likely to be experiencing a significant disconnect with pain, an important consideration in gaining control of them. EDPs, excited delirium, and many of the SUDS cases are often found nude on first contact.
