View Full Version : Finally found ammo H-Bar likes
New Colt H-Bar, have done a few things to make it better but still needs a free floating front handguard.
Had some nice spring weather to take it out and find out what it likes.
Tried 5 different rounds and Black Hills 50gr. V-Max came out on top.
Had 6 different ones to try but forgot the American Eagle XM193 5.56, 55gr. at home, so could only play with the 223 rem's. Don't know how a 5.56 will be any better or worse.
Here's a picture of my groups, all shot at 100yds, fired as fast as I could reaquire the target in my scope. All 25 shots were done in 15 minutes or less.
Last target was with Black Hills but taking a little more time between shots.

How does firing fast help you determine what the most accurate load will be? If you took your time on all of them you may have come out with a different winner.
I would also suggest firing 10 shot groups, and 5 or so groups for each load, average out the size of the groups, and then compare.

this.
I would not consider this fast shooting, each shot was taken after target was settled steady in the scope (shooting from a rest)
If I'm hunting and take a shot, I'm not going to sit there and wait for the barrel to cool down to take a second or third shot, I'm going to shoot just the way I did at the range.
All 5 types of ammo were shot the same way, using the same method and about the same time. This is how I chose to do it, for me it showed me what I was looking for.
As to the 10 shots, why? I use to do 3 shot groups, moved to 5 shot groups, why not 25 shot groups ??
Again, this is a hunting rifle, not bench rest, it's going to be used in hunting situations, I'm happy with what I found out, I'm not trying to show or tell anyone how to test their rifle, just showing you what I did.

Sorry I thought you were trying to find out what the most accurate load is in your gun, my bad.

Based on those green/black targets, I'd say that Brown Bear was the winner. Very accurate, and you can buy 5X as much ammo as 1 box of Blackhills. But if $1 PER SHOT isn't important, then I think you are correct. The blackhills slightly beat out the others.
