I am putting a build together and have a question for the knowledgeable folks on M4C.

I have a barrel with milled flats for a set screw front sight base and want to use with a DD RIS II FSP. I was going to send it to Adco and get a regular FSB installed in spite of the flats but was thinking why not just try out a set screw FSB.

I have heard bad things about set screw FSBs, that they shift and may not be up to hard use but wouldn't the RIS protect the bottom half of the FSB from getting knocked around? How does the Army keep the FSB from shifting on their SDM-R? Those are installed using set screws correct?

Anyone have experience using a set screw FSB on a "working gun"?

A set screw is ok for a lo pro gas block. If you're talking about an actual Front Sight tower... no way.

Armalite had some shitty clamp on system for a while... not sure if they pulled their heads out of their asses on that one or not.

I mean flats like this:

And a set screw FSB like this:

I have to give credit for these pics to Adco and CMMG but wanted to clarify what I wanted to do.

this is a windage adjustable FSP common on competition guns. I would not use it for serious purposes...

If you already have the parts, why not assemble, sight in the rifle and adjust the fsb using the set screws while the rear sight remains in mechanical zero. Then send the barrel to adco for permanent pinning.

Thanks for the input everyone, I am just going to have Adco taper pin a FSB on it.

The Mk12 SPR uses set screws. It helps to have dimples in the barrel, use proper torque, and to use Rockset. Also you can design the barrel/block fit to be a press fit.
