View Full Version : Semi-Auto Rimfire - What You Got?

Someone else started a thread for bolt rimfire, so I thought I would start one for semi-auto.

Myself I just got done building a .22lr. Will be taking it to the range soon to see how well it will do. While I did not build it to be a one hole five shot gun. I am hoping I can get some really good groupings with some decent ammo (just bought some CCI SV for a baseline then got their Greentag ammo, Wolf MT and Eley Tenex). I intend to shoot at 50yds.

I used:

-Tac-Sol Xring Receiver
-Tac-Sol Fluted Threaded Barrel (will soon host a spectre)
-Leupold 3x9x33 Rimfire Scope W/parallax adjustment
-Burris Xtreme 1" Low Rings (yes a little much, but it is what the local shop had and they were pretty light weight)
-Kidd Two Stage Trigger
-Bell & Carlson Varmint Stock

all I have is a basic ruger 10/22 that I put a volquatzen hammer in and threw some tec-sights on. pretty accurate for a plinker. I'd like to do one or two ground-up 10/22 builds on aftermarket receivers.

I had a Marlin 60 that was 40 years old. I also had a Ruger 10/22. HATED the Ruger except for the Butler Creek 25-round mags and their speedloader. The Marlin 60 shot circles around the 10/22 and could hold quarter-sized groups at 50 yards and was more reliable. But in all fairness the 10/22 I bought was a lemon and I regretted getting rid of the 60.

The Marlin was one of those guns that I buy and shoot. No tinkering or altering for me, the Marlin 60 was perfect.

I now have a Henry Lever Action 22 and it is one of my favorite rifles, it goes to the range EVERY TIME and when I take new people shooting they love it and don't want to put it down. But I still need a semi-auto 22 rifle to fill the gap so I may give the 10/22 another try later on if I'm inclined to customizing it otherwise the Marlin 60 beats it as far as accuracy out of the box, as well as price.

If this thread is oriented more towards precision rimfire then I apologize as I'm mostly chattering about fun plinkers at the range and not the custom accuracy-tuned rigs.

I just acquired all the parts for my version of a precision 10/22. I'm running a factory action, GM fluted SS barrel, Hogue stock, Weigand 1 piece base/rings, Volq trigger kit, & a Burris E1 scope. For 50-100 yd paper punching it fits the bill & was cheap.

I also have 2 GSG's for the kids & a Feather Industries RAV-22. In the near future I plan on picking up a Savage MKIITR 22LR.

Payj,

I am interested to hear your opinion on the xring receiver. I remember lots of hype, then success mixed with disappointment and broken firing pins. Always wanted one bit other things came first.

I can also tell you that it's a bad idea to run .22 shorts in your tac sol barrel. I had a squib and bulged the barrel half way down using them. Still need to pick up another tac sol barrel....

My gun is a factory 10/22 with tac sol bbl, trigger and bolt work by CPC and a Boyds tacticool stock.

A 10-22 with a heavy barrel in a laminated stock. Box stock. I mounted a Leupold 6.5-20 EFR on it. Works good, no problems. I put a Spikes barrel in an LMT MRP rifle length upper. I shoot the snot out of this thing. I've got maybe 5K shots through it, haven't cleaned it yet. Probably should. Having read how everyone loves their Marlin Model 60s, I resolved to buy one but someone gave me one before I could. Haven't shot it yet.

bnanaphone,

The Xring is great! I have about 1000 rounds through it....Yes, the earlier version (some later versions like mine had the bad firing pin too) had firing pin issues. My gunsmith has a good relationship with tacsol, so he was able to steer me in the right direction. My receiver DID have the "bad" firing pin. My gunsmith put the "good" one in. Tacsol revised it. They gave my gunsmith about 50 new firing pins for his receivers.....Because he put the new pin in I have had 0 issues right from the start. Probably 4-5 fte's in 1000 rounds using cci sv and subsonic ammo. Not bad imo.

Shooting either CCI SV or Wolf MT I am shooting dime sized groups at 50yds. Pretty good for what it is....

I contemplated upgrading the 10/22 but I figured that I was able to get dime sized groups with the 40 gr Winchester hollowpoint subsonic round. All I had done was put a pillar in teh birch stock and play with pressure point on the barrel. I recently bought a Hogue nylon overmolded stock to make it more of a knock about gun, tired of dinging the wood up. I'll try and replicate what I did for accuaracy with the beech stock. The only thing I'd work on is the smoothness/lightness of the trigger.

I've always admired the lines of the Marlin 60 and the T/C for that matter.

I have a 10/22 that I put a heavy barrel on back in the early 90s. I eventually put it into a red/white/blue laminate stock. It's wearing a compact Burris 2-7 but I've got a Bushnell Tactical 10x I'm thinking about mounting.
It shoots very accurately but once in a while doesn't feed properly, possibly a chamber issue.

I have a 10/22 with a Tapco Intrafuse stock and some internal upgrades. I am thinking of getting another 10/22 and turning it into a sniper rifle lookalike.

10/22 that has been all gone through, here it is before i camoed it. it'll basically put every shot in the same hole at 50 yards and keep a group about the size of a quarter at 100. real sweet gun, my gunsmith did a great job on it. it wears a 4-12 bushnell scope. i forget what all parts were put in it as it was done about 10 years ago. i've shot quite a few squirrels with it, it's been a great gun!

Not for real precision, but you can't beat them for extreme fun and rapid fire shooting...the Remington Nylon 66 rifle. I have a Black Diamond and a Mohawk Brown white diamond version. They are also a joy to carry.

AMT Challenge Edition....cut to 16" and threaded & re-stocked with a McMillian Anschuts silouette style stock. Jewel trigger and shilen select bbl. I also have some Kidd parts n the bolt.

On par with my Anschutz bolt gun on paper, but I almost think the match chamber is too tight and/or needs a stronger spring. Does not like to be dirty.

I'm with you on the Marlin 60 - very, very accurate out of the box.
Good, cheap fun.

The only "precision" semi-auto rimfire rifle I have is a 10/22 with a bunch of high-end guts and a Shaw barrel. I had it built several months back and have yet to shoot for groups....can't even remember what I scoped it with (Burris FFII 3-9x40, I think). Otherwise, I have 3-4 Marlin 60s, a plain-jane 10/22, a Marlin 922M, a Belgium Browning .22LR, and a Remington 241 Speedmaster (my first rifle, got it when I was 8, 38 yrs ago).

Just 2 Rugers here. A Mk III pistol and a 10/22 with peep sights, set up for Appleseed style shooting.

No reliability problems in either. The Mk III's got a Volquartsen extractor and a fairly loose chamber that eats even the nastiest bulk packs without complaint. The 10/22 also got a VQ extractor, but the chamber is tight enough that it won't extract some brands of ammo unfired. Shoot 'em though, and they pop right out.

Two here. A Marlin Model 60 and a Marlin 795 with a 3-9X Simmons scope. Use the Model 60 to teach new shooters and to plink around with, and the 795 is my squirrel/small game gun. Also use it for some friendly games of Gun HORSE. Both are dead on accurate and will eat just about any ammo there is. Very happy with both.

I picked up a 20" 10/22 a couple of weeks ago for some cheap trigger time. I have a Simmons 3x9 on the way and plan on adding a Volquartsen target hammer and their bolt release.

Just one at the moment, a Marlin 60 which is for introducing new shooters, casual plinking, and cheap fun for me. It's just perfect except for the one tiny detail of being tube fed rather than detachable magazine. I'll hang onto it forever and easily see why it's one of the all time favorites.

I have a Marlin model 60 that I bought 25 years ago to teach my son to shoot.
A SW M&P 15-22 that's more fun than perhaps anything I own.

I can't mention the Henry lever since this is the semi auto forum, or the buckmark since this is the rifle forum.

Plain Jane 10/22 with iron sights, threaded barrel and AAC Pilot.

Add some Ruger BX25 mags and its a sick gun. I like the wood and iron sights for durability and simplicity. :D

I like your basic and LIGHT approach. That is one of the things that attracts me to the Ruger 10/22. What did you do the bolt release?

10/22, just bought it, haven't fired it. Maybe next week. Box stock, wood furniture, carbine barrel, 4x fixed scope.

I have three 10-22s. Two have Green Mountain barrels and one is stock. I also have the "Charger" version of the 10-22.
I have found that switching out the stock hammer for a Volquartsen replacement is the simplest, most cost effective trigger improvement you can do to a 10-22. The bolt release mod is handy too along with an extended mag release.

Ruger 10/22 that's been a faithful companion in the field and many a Saturday shooting session for almost 35 years. The only thing I've added to it is a sling. More than accurate enough to take rabbits with headshots

I have a dedicated upper I purchased from Nordic Components. Shoots thecheap Wally World boxes of .22lr just fine. Put a 1x Aimpoint red dot I believe my old Comp M3 and off to the range with a bunch of 26 rnd mags. Great for working on positionals and non standard positions. VTAC sling on there as well .

Well worth looking into if you're serious about the Carbine. Hell of a lot cheaper than sending 5.56 down range!!!

I have a 10-22 TT, stock except for a VQ trigger group. Scoped with a Nikon 3-9x40 BDC. Recently picked up a Henry Golden Boy in .17HMR, and more recently snagged a couple of old 10-22 receivers. I'll strip the newer of the two, get the bolts reworked by Que ($50 each), put in a 16.5 inch Kidd Match Bull and upgrade the trigger group from the original rifle with a Kidd trigger parts kit (barrel and trigger parts should be delivered this week). I found another Hogue Overmolded stock for that rifle for $50 at Midway. Should be fun. I'm anxious to see how the Henry works on Muskrats when the ice goes off the lake. Those, a Ruger MkII I've had for 30 years and a stainless Single Six round out my rimfire collection.
