View Full Version : food grade containers?
How can you tell if a barrel or container is food grade or not? And does any one have any suggestions on where they could be purchased for cheap?

bakeries usually have 5 gallon containers they receive raw materials in
If its not labeled food grade, then you should check with the manufacturer. I believe it has something to do with the chemicals being used to break the product from the mold. That's what I have been told in the past anyway.
If it food grade it will have a NSF approval on it. As the above poster stated, it has to do with the release agent used in production of the plastic buckets.
Someone told me you could tell by the numbers on the containers like 1 inside the triangle or a 2 was good to go, but I was not sure if that was true? Was hoping somebody would be able to tell me.

Also if you are near a Mediterranean type deli near you. They get olives in large plastic containers, although you may not be able to wash the brine out. Any large grocery store like Whole Foods or one of those "all you can eat" places.
Just seal it in a mylar bag first and then don't worry about it.
NC Dave,
A guy near Fremont has food grade barrels for sale. The barrels are 60 gallon and some smaller I guess ~40 gal. He has these for sale on craigslist for $15. If you do a search on that site for rain barrels you will find them. The larger ones had pickles in them and the smaller ones had peppers in them.
I bought some from him a couple of weeks ago and they are pretty nice barrels with screw tops and an O ring seal.
