Picked this up last week. Really nice handgun. Put 250 rds through it yesterday and today, just plinking.

Initial thoughts.

Trigger needs work for sure. My eyesight is even worse. I've got to find better iron sights that I can see for sure. Any suggestions?
The mags seem kind of flimsy too.

Otherwise it is a great handgun. Not a single problem in the 250 rds.

ruger has some versions with hi viz sights on them, pretty sure you can pick them up after market. Never noticed a trigger being bad on them, but then again most of the versions I have shot have had thousands of rounds through them.

Unless Ruger has changed the way they make the magazines for these, they will hold up well. The mag tubes are susceptible to surface rust so wipe them down when you clean the gun.

The magazine disconnector that Ruger puts in the new 22/45s adds several steps to the disassembly and reassembly procedure. It also prevents the magazines from dropping free when the magazines catch is pressed. If removing the disconnector won't put you in a legal bind, replace the part with a spacer; it will make operation of the pistol more convenient.

Wildcat, is there a spacer commercially available?

Also if anyone knows of an extended thumb safety that more closely mimics a 1911 I'd be interested. There was one from a company called Broken Gun Ranch but they appear to be out of business.

I'd like to know this myself. It would be nice for the mags to drop free.

That's a nice looking 22/45 there, OP. A few nice upgrades on there that I'd like to have on my 22/45. Not a huge deal, but I'd take these features if I could get them without paying a premium:

* Threaded barrel
* Checkering on the front strap.
* Replaceable panels (my understanding is you can put standard 1911 grips in place of these?).

Very nice, enjoy your Ruger!

I'm not aware of a commercially available spacer. The best solution is to replace the MK-III hammer and hammer bushing with a MK-II hammer and bushing:

The spacer you can make in five minutes and it will work until you can obtain the MK-II parts. All you need is something to keep the hammer centered in the frame. After you remove the magazine disconnector and spring:

something needs to occupy their place on the bushing because of the way the MK-III hammer is cut.

I bent a paperclip around the hammer bushing two full turns and cut it off to make this spacer. The loop must be squeezed a bit to fit tightly on the bushing or it will interfere with the trigger mechanism.

i tried the VQ MK2 bushing, but it had too much play and made the trigger shit. a member at RFC is making a really nice and snug bushing only rivaled by clark custom.

This is a pic off of Clark Customs website. Is this the kit that would be used after the removal of the disconnector?

If not, what would this kit do for the gun?

Wildcat. Thanks for the suggestion but I'm not sure I have the confidence in my ability to get the paperclip thing right. I'm just not that familar with this weapon.

Nice pickup Scoby, definitely a good shooter.

I recently got this version of the 22/45:

And while it to is a good shooter, I much prefer my MK II for these reasons: the grips are integral and the grip is too slim and the mags are more difficult to fully seat. While not as good of a fit for me, I still consider this a nice handgun, great target shooter, and a very good value, esp at the price I got.

yes it should remove the retarded mag safety. but i have no exp on how the trigger will turn out. a lot of the rimfire central guys rave about the clark bushing. a snug fit should equal a very crisp trigger.

Thanks. I may just give this a shot. For the 20 bucks it costs I can't go too wrong. I can always reinstall the original parts.
