I am finished with one of the guns I will remember for the rest of my life.

In short, I got the opportunity to do this gun for a member on the forum.

http://i807.photobucket.com/albums/yy358/SuperiorFirearms/Lever%20Love/100_3563.jpg

What he did was just let me go and do my thing. It has been some time, but all good things take time.
The Marlin is one of my life long loves, but the first part of the 1970’s is when they made the guns I like.
This gun is a 1972 model 1895 45-70 straight stock with no cross bolt safety - the way it should be.

http://i807.photobucket.com/albums/yy358/SuperiorFirearms/Lever%20Love/100_3556.jpg

I cut, crowned, silver soldered the sights on, custom fit the rail to the gun, cut the stock to 12-inch lop, fit a buttpad to the stock, had a custom sling made for the gun, did 30 hrs of body work on the gun, and finished it a custom Cera Kote.

that is some real nice work you've done there. I'd love to have someone with your skills work some magic on my 336.

We've got some emotion wrapped up in this one, brother.

Well done. Really, really, really well done.

Respect.

I can think of a nickname: "Thumper".

I can hear the deer screaming in fear all the way down here in Texas. And a black bear would speak in respectful tones as well.

Beautiful work, Mr. Smith.

Here's my 1895GBL. She's a sweet little thing and a thumper, all rolled into one. This picture isn't current...she now wears an XS Scout Rail.

What are your thoughts on the GBL? I'm looking to get one as my first lever action/1895.

Less expensive than the SBL (although the stainless is a better idea if you are going into rough/wet country)
Build quality pretty good...Marlin seems to be running through a rough patch but this one is good
I like the large loop...good for gloves
Wish it came with the rail and peep sights like the SBL...I replaced the standard sights with the XS sights shown here (which are better than the SBLs) and the forward rail
Very reliable
Haven't tested formally for accuracy...I can ring gongs no problem off hand
Laminated stock is solid, comfortable but heavy...not a bad thing when you load up heavy loads though
Very handy length
In the end, I've probably put close to the same money as an SBL, but I like this just fine. It is set up better than an SBL in my opinion...just have to decide for yourself if the stainless is worth it.

We got the opportunity to get this gun on the scale and it is 8.5lbs.

The thing that people don’t get on the factory gun is attention to detail.

That is exactly what I am looking for!! Only difference would be a loop type lever like the one that Kilopaparomeo has on his Marlin.

Beautiful work!!

I recently received my 1894C back from Superior Firearms. I recommend Mr. Smiths work highly.

My rifle was a new production Marlin and a real POS. The front sight was crooked due to the factory drilling the holes off center. The action was very stiff. Now it is very smooth. It actually shoots straight. :jester:

More absolutely beautiful work!

Man...I can hardly wait for the magic to be completed on my 336. I have no doubt it'll be a work of mechanical art. :-)

What kind of scope should I look for to scope my .357 Marlin. Are there any brands you recommend? Not looking for anything really high powered, but just a nice all around field scope.

Thanks for the excellent info! I like the higher capacity and the big loop. I would likely swap the sights as well.

Leuplod is on top of the 1895 in the pics.
