View Full Version : Help finding single stack 9mm
I have a buddy with a specific pistol in mind. I can't think of anything that fits though. He wants something small enough to conceal but still large enough that recoil isn't snappy like some smaller guns can be but he also wants the grip to be long enough for all his fingers to fit. I'd say he has avg to large hands. He'd also prefer a single stack. Pistol must also be in 9mm. Any ideas?
Sounds like he wants a Luger P08...
If something newer, how about a Sig P225 or S&W 3913.
For that matter, the S&W M&P with small grips might be a great option.
I was going to say Sig P225, but Doc beat me to it. Good luck finding one for sale. I've only seen one.
As Doc said, a modern double stack like the M&P or Glock 19 is in the same size class as a P225 and much cheaper and more available.

There's quite a few P225s out there if you look in the right places.

There are some imported Sig P6's that are European police turn in version of the P225 out there. A very nice, reliable compact pistol usually around $400 or so.

There's also the H&K P7.
Having owned both a P6 and recently aquired 3913 tsw I have to say the 3913 is the single stack 9 that Ive been looking for wish I'd got one years ago.its slim trim and still big enough for what I want/need and parts are available from S&W ..just my .02
I bought a Sig 239. I like it, lightweight fits the hand good, single stack, fairly small size, 9mm.
I have a P225. Have had one for years. It really is a great pistol. The slim grip makes it very concealable. It's accurate and very dependable. I like the 226 better, but it doesn't conceal as well.
I also use to own a Glock 19. It was also a very reliable pistol, but IMHO is harder to conceal than the 225 and I don't see the advantage of having a 19 over the 17.
I also like the HK USP compact. Grip is smaller than it's full sized sibling and it's very accurate.
If it were me, I would get the P225. If not that, then the HK USP. He should shoot whatever he's considering and choose the one that works best for him.

I would say a Sig P239. I have one in a .40 and it has a great recoil ,so I would assume that one in 9mm would be even better in that department. My P239 conceals just fine on me.

Walther PPS w/ 7 or 8 round mag.
I've been carrying a P239 in 9mm lately. I'm satisfied with it, but not 100% happy. It's just a little too large for the capacity. I would be completely happy if it were a little smaller or carried a few more rounds. Honestly, a double stack 9mm like a HK P2000 is only slightly larger.
Never handled a PPS but just finished watching this 24 minute video. Looks like it fits his needs exactly with the extended magazine and seems very shootable as well. I have an HK P7 and find that the grips make it too wide and as such the G19 is better in almost every way.

The G19 is wider than the P7.
Walther PPS FTW. Nice pistol.
If you can find an aluminum-framed subcompact 1911 in 9mm, they're a treat to carry and shoot. They also (reportedly) lack the feeding issues of their .45 caliber brethren in the smaller frame size.
Kahr K9 or P9. K9 is an all steel model P9 is the full size with a polymer frame.
The G19 is wider than the P7.

DW Guardians ,have had good reviews
Steel framed Kahr: K-9, or T-9.

What happened to the slide on the p7? It is absurdly thin and probably ruined the visual effect eh?:jester:
Steel framed Kahr: K-9, or T-9.
I'll second the recommendation on the T9 because its grip is longer than the K9. We have a K9 and I find the grip too short for all my fingers to fit on it. I wear size large gloves.
The TP9 might be a good choice as well; it has the grip length and slide length of the T9 but with a polymer frame. My wife has a TP9 and doesn't find the recoil objectionable. All my fingers easily fit on the TP9 frame.
Also, as several folks mentioned, the Walther PPS in 9mm with the 7 or 8 rd mags might work well for him. All my fingers fit on the PPS with a 7(barely) or 8(with a bit of room to spare) rd mag.
All these guns are slim, still in production, and IMO, reliable, easy to shoot, and durable.
Walther PPS w/ 7 or 8 round mag.
Walther PPS FTW. Nice pistol.

+4 on the PPS
Also see the PPS thread in this section.
The first 9mm semi I ever purchased was an S&W 639 - stainless top and bottom, 8 shots, very heavy, easy to control. They made them with an aluminum frame (439) and blue steel (539). It might fit the bill if you can find one.

Love my P7. A very easy gun to shoot and conceal, though he'll probably need a custom holster due to the butt-heavy weight distribution.
+1 for the P7
or better yet...
H&K P9S! :D

I don't think you could go wrong with the Walther PPS, or the H&K P7M8.

I am the WORLD's BiGGEST fan of the P7. It is an awesome piece of gunmaking history and technology. But I think the Kahr Mk9 or PM9 is a better handgun for the average person. It is much lighter, smaller and only two bullets down. Of all the cool guns I have, it is the one that actually gets carried.
S&W 3913 *
Kahr K9 *
Walther PPS *
H&K P7 *
Sig 225
Any of those would work fine. Those starred I've owned and would saw no problems with any of them. My favorite was the S&W 3913.
I am a fan of the P225 and the P239
There's also the H&K P7.
To me there is the p7 and the rest are inferior. But that's me, I drink hk coolaid. An alloy version would be super sweet :(. Though pps looks pretty good, I just seem to hear mixed review on them.

An alloy P7 would be amazing. Perhaps with a bit of dehorning.

That would get rid of the excessive weight.....man who wants to make them and sell them?
Damnit HK.
I have had good luck with Kahr pistols and have owned a custom PM-9, currently own a custom P-9 and two custom T-9's. All were intialy purchased for between $490 to $550 new or used.
I passed on the PM-9 after attempting to warm up to it. I purchased it used and had it worked on by Accurate Iron (slide melt and stippled) after a while in hopes i would warm up to it. It never miss fired but over all i thought my P-9 was better all around and actualy easier for me to draw from concealment.

I most often carry a P-9 that I have had since 1999. It's never had a miss-fire, but I have not exactly shot the snot out of it either. It has a few thousand rounds through it and I only recently changed out the recoil spring. It's light, smaller than most 9mm's in it's class and has been very reliable. I recently had Accurate Iron melt the slide and then had Bowie Tactical Melonite the slide.

One of the T-9's has been shot alot and I reviewed it in this thread.

Sort of a mixed review. I found some issues and think I have gotten them worked out now. I'll start a second round on it soon. I realy like the T-9, but it is a lot harder to get holsters ect for as only a little over 1,000 of them have been made since 2001. Mitch Rosen and Blade-Tech are the only sources that I have found so far.
Good luck in your search.

I've looked at a stripped frame and tried to figure out a way either drill it to lighten it, or strip it down and make a polymer frame for it.
One thing a P7 does have is a four inch barrel. It has to be the smallest/shortest gun with a barrel that long.
Love my P7, but I'm thinking of a PPS.

There were some early PPSes that had issues, those have long since been fixed.
In my experience, 9 times out of 10 a person has an issue with their PPS, it's because they're not lubing it properly.
They're great guns, and absolutely up to H&K's quality level, don't be afraid to get one.

Agree. Something in the Kahr 9mm line, one of the 2 listed is probably the best for concealability. I like the P9's and PM9's. Enough people that I trust are now recommending the Walther PPS, so I'd probably consider that as a live option to investigate, if I were looking.

The SIG P239 and P225 are both big and heavy compared to a Walther PPS.
Here is my 9mm Walther PPS on the right, next to a SIG P239:

I have a S&W 908 the economy version of the 3913. Aluminum alloy frame, single stack 9mm. Great gun.
Does anyone else here find it remarkable that so many of the recommendations in this thread are for guns that are out of production, eg SIG 225, H&K P7, S&W 3913, etc?
As the end of production for any particular gun recedes into history, at some point parts availability begins to become a significant issue.

True. I'm having a hard time finding the scraper for the P7's gas tube.

He wants something small enough to conceal
don't pick a pistol based on how easy it is to conceal. find a pistol that you are confident will perform well in the time of need, and then go shopping for a good holster that will conceal it.
I carry my P6/P225 all the time. Great little shooter and it just fits the hand so well. I do however wish mine was post '89(I think the year is)so that I would have the updated feed ramp because she is temperamental with hollows.

My PPS was a 2009 model. It worked fine on 9mm hardball but it needed to be completely clean and well lubed for JHP's. It would not work well at all with Winchester RA9T. My PPS certainly had a nicer feel than a Glock, but I'd personally trust a 9mm Glock or an H&K in any caliber a whole lot more.

Send it off for a reliability package. That's what I did with my P6

Where did you send yours Grant? I love the gun, she's just old and needs a little love. Finish is pretty much worn off in a few spots and it has some "battle scars". It was made in '79 and looks it. hahaha
As for the 3953 you linked to....whoa momma that looks like a winner right there. I always wanted to shoot/own a 39 series.

Search gun broker for 39 series pistols. They come up once in awhile and man are they a nice weapon.
My LE Rep at S&W was so impressed with how my 3953 turned out that he sucked one of the last 2 up and had S&W do the same thing to his that was done to mine.

I picked one up from HKparts.net about 2 months ago. They had received a bunch of them. If they're out just click on the notification
