I have an off the wall question ?

can you mount a MI SS series rail upside down, now before you start scratching you head and asking why, all I want to know is can it be done ??
I'm talking about the 15 inch ( SS15 )
I was thinking if the only thing you were going to mount on top of the rail was the front BUS, and you hate the look of the top rail looking unused ??

I like the look of the MI SS series rail and wondered if you inverted it, you could mount a magpul AFG or any other grip anywhere on the underside and use the little 2 inch rail that MI sells for the top where you would mount the front BUS and not have the look of the rail on top.

only thing I might see as a problem would be trying to take down the rifle on the pivot of the front pin, I think the rail would protrude back to where it might hit the front of the lower magwell....you might have to pop both pins to disassemble the rifle ??

what do you thing, here is a link with a pic, just imagine it inverted ??

I have that rail on two rifles. I believe that it's possible to do what you want. The only other issue I could see is the small rail section not giving your front site enough height to match the rear. Other than that, the rail installs by screwing it onto the threaded barrel nut. You would simply stop while the rail is inverted then counter rotate the jam nut until it is solidly against the rail. There is an aluminum screw that prevents the handguard from rotating which goes into the handguard near the receiver. That would be upside down in your setup.

I would agree that you probably have to split the upper and lower completely for cleaning. the rail does come with the 2" and 4" rail sections iirc from the factory with all the required mounting hardware.

thanks for the quick reply, I figured the rail heights may not be exact, but they are for BUS only , not like I might ever use them....

I'm thinking this on a 18 inch barrel with the middy gas, with a 15 inch SS rail , it should look proportionate

so that rail tightens just like a YHM then, does it require a special jam wrench to tighten ??

This is the jam nut tool I used. I doubt it is anything special. I used the same tool to remove the jam nut on my Les Baer handguard.

As for pics: This rifle is my complete BCM 18" barrel w/ rifle gas system build. I am still playing with the setup and figuring what I like and don't. The rail is currently occupied by the MagPul RSA, AFG, BUIS, and tlr 3. I decided to make it my DMR gun.

This is my Les Baer with another of the same handguard on my 16" BCM midlength barrel.

You can see how the jam nut and handguard come together in this pic.

I like this rail handguard because my hands don't have to deal with the rails themselves. If you invert your handguard, I think you will have to cover all those rails to keep from shredding your hands.

any issues for take down, does the jam nut hit the lower when opened fully ??

Yup, both are ss15 rails.

When normally installed no issues taking the rifles down.
