Good morning, new to the Forum, I am currently building a 2nd DPMS LR in 308, but making this one in 21 inch barrel Heavy contour, any reason I should not?, I have a POF in 20" and DPMS LR in24 so I figure why not give it a shot?
. purpose: walking deer hunting, Why not use the POF? answer its for sale currently
. the 24 inch I use for longer sitting hunting from my tree stand, over 100 acres I am on.
. So any pros or cons before I take the barrel to lathe?
Thanks

For walking deer hunting, a 21" heavy barrel is not going to be fun.. especially if you have to cover any distance.. 100 acres could be a lot if really hilly and covering it multiple times. I would opt for a 16" light weight barrel around 8-9lbs and use a 5 or 10 rd mag to keep things light. 21" HB sounds more like a bench/prone setup. YMMV.

Cheers,
Hawk

bathroom scale says 11.5 pounds, I am use to that carried my M24 and M21 all over Iraq, mostly the M21 with SAGE EBR, anyway we will see how it shoots tomorrow

well 1st 15 rounds down the new barrel 1 and clean for the first 10, then this 5 shot group with American Eagle 168 OTM factory ammo, bottom shot was a called pull on my part.

center to Center .763, I am sure it will get better as the barrel brakes in

So over all not to bad; room for improvement, will leave it for a few and see if it tightens up, if not, will go to 19 inch

Not bad at all for a hunting rifle. Forget the deer, go for gnats. Thumbs up.
