messed around a bit wtih a snubby (2.25") in 357 mag at the gun club. it's surprisingly pocketable. nice trigger, and probably quite shootable with light 357 loads.

also checked out an LCR... so light i'd almost be scared to shoot it

I carry my SP101 .357 2.25" barrel when I am in states that accept my FL CWL. I love that little gun. It's not light, but the weight helps soak up the kick of .357 Magnum recoil.

I carry it in a Milt Spark PMK OWB holster and find that the holster really tucks it in close to my body and hides it nicely.

I carry one in a front pocket sometimes. The stock sticks out a bit in regular sized front pockets. If you have the right depth in your front pocket, it is not a problem. Sure it weighs more than a J-frame or LCR but that weight is very comforting.
I found a leather front pocket holster at a local fun show that was molded to fit the SP101. Mine also has the hammer bobbed from the factory and makes presentation easier because it doesn't get hung up.

My primary off-duty carry is my .40 S&W Glock 27, but I occasionally carry my 2.25 inch SP101 (or my .38 Spl Taurus Model 85 also pictured below).

I almost always carry my revolvers IWB, with the Taurus occasionally on my ankle. I've found that the SP101 is too heavy to be carried on my ankle.

Like mentioned above, the heft of the SP101 does absorb the .357 rounds pretty well and it really is an accurate little gun. It is my favorite revolver.

I had a 3 inch model for a while and it was a fantastic little gun. I did however end up trading it for a J frame when I decided to carry a revolver in my pocket as back up to my duty gun. It did shoot standard 357s very well for its size.

I carry mine around the property when I feel the need (wild-life). I like it a lot...it's a "little .357 beast."

leaning toward a j-frame here gentlemen...
a 4" barreled 9mm (i own 2) has pretty similar ballistics to a shorty 357... not to mention higher capacity...
as much as i'd love to own an sp101, i'm in the market for a pocket gun... and the only reasonable pocket guns are 38 snubbies or 380 autos. (i've tried so hard to find a tiny reliable 9mm.. i don't think it's out there)

so i guess i should start a new thread LCR vs j-frame.. thinking j-frame just cause it's been out longer.

I have always wanted a SP101 and finally after several years, I decided to buy one. I have now owned it for 1 month and must say that it is my favorite carry gun. It goes everywhere that I go. The gun fits my hand perfectly and feels awesome. I just wish I had picied one up sooner. The weight doesn't bother me as I am used to carrying autos with 13-17 rounds in the mag. It is also small enough that I can carry in my front pocket or back pocket, it doesnt even bother me to carry it on my ankle. As you can see from my post, I absolutely love this gun.

I do not carry a SP101, but I have a friend who does. He carries his DAO SP101 in his waistband and sometimes on his ankle. He has no issues with either style of carry. This gun is a heck of a lot of fun to shoot. It is accurate, tames recoil well and with the thousands of rounds he has shot through it has a decent trigger that smoothed out quite a bit.

i was having the same dilemma,
LCR 357 or J Frame 642 38 +P
The LCR 357 is 17 ounces Steel and Polymer Frame
J Frame 642 is 15 ounces Alloy Frame
And
Ruger SP101 with a 2 inch barrel is like
25 Ounces.

So the sp would be too heavy for my pocket.

I would not want to ever shoot 357 Mag out of the
S&W Alloy J Frame's they weigh like 14 ounces.

I am leaning toward the 642 in 38+P because it is a little easier to pocket than the LCR cause the LCR has bigger rubber grips,
these bigger rubber houge tamer grips the LCR has is the reason people say its better to shoot than a J Frame..but I want to replace the J Frame grips with crimson trace that cover the alloy backstrap making it more comfortable anyway...

I hope my rambling helped with some reasoning

I've owned several SP's and much prefer the 3 1/16" version. I've never shot a small .357 with full power loads that was as easy on the shooter. I normally only carry it in the woods and yard, with two rounds of snake shot up first. Even the 2 1/4" version is WAY too heavy for ME to pocket carry, but as a versatile, bull strong, small 357, the SP101 is very hard to beat.

Used to keep one in my pocket for long walks with the dogs, and when hiking about with minimal carry stuff;switched to the LCR a few weeks back, lighter and carries same loads.

I carry my 2" SP101 appendix style, using either a Remora No-Clip holster, or a Mr. Softy by High Noon Holsters.

I found it a lot easier to shoot the Ruger with full house loads, than a j-frame with +p.

I can't part with the j-frame, but the Ruger gets a lot more trigger time.

I frequently carry my 2" SP101 w/ Crimson Trace grips in a Custom Carry Concepts "Shaggy" appendix carry holster.

Works well for me.

does smith still make a j-frame with a <2" barrel in 38 special with a steel frame?
or a 357 with a steel frame of equivalent size? or is it all airweights now?:confused:

I have one that I carry infrequently.

For snubbie revolvers I have a Riger SP101, a Colt Detective .38, A Charter Arms Bulldog .44 sp. and a Charter Arms Undercover .38. If I need a discreet revolver the UC is the smallest of the three. I sometimes carry the Bulldog and sometimes the SP101.

The very first gun that I ever CCW was a SP101 with 2.25" barrel and a spurless hammer. Nice little hand cannon. Haven't carried since I switched to a G19 eight years ago.

That is a nice gun.
I've owned several SP's and much prefer the 3 1/16" version.
