Mr. Smith

This is a gun that most people don’t know about but it has a long track record behind it.

I have shot them in the past but this is not your grandpa’s BLR hope you like what I did.

http://i807.photobucket.com/albums/yy358/SuperiorFirearms/BLR%20TO%20DIE%20FOR/100_3707.jpg

The rifle is 7lb 308 that just goes where ever you would like to take it.

http://i807.photobucket.com/albums/yy358/SuperiorFirearms/BLR%20TO%20DIE%20FOR/100_3710.jpg

A custom rifle is what I am talking about this gun has steel sights and an aimpoint H1 with a co witness.

Rifles like this are a real treat for me to do it took me a long time to get it right and I would love to know what you think about the gun.

I think the rack and pinion mechanism that's central to this rifle's design is really interesting and clever.

That being said, I've never shot any type of lever gun. Would you say that the R&P gears are an improvement [and/or smoother] over the traditional lever?

Also, that this rifle has a detachable mag, I can see the pros and cons about that too. In my book, the BLR is the Winchester 1895 of modern times, am I right?

wow
very nice. That optic set-up would have been handy back when I ran deer dogs or for hogs.
Years ago I hunted w/a fellow who used a BLR in 243, he was deadly with that thing, off the bench it was a legit 1 MOA rifle...

I was using my X-FIL's 1964 winchester model 88 i 308, with a Bauch & Lomb scope, the adjustments were in the mounts, not the scope.

The difference in the two were night and day w/the edge to the BLR.

That is exactly what I want in a truck gun. I've been weighing my options as I need a rifle that can be taken down to fit behind/underneath seats.

I cut the barrel to 16.5 and the LOP to 12.5.
The whole gun is less than 2 feet long.

Thanks guys.

The RP mechanism is smooth as butter out of the box.

As to improvement it lets you have a gun that is lighter over all.

It is a 40 year old design and has had a good amount of use in the field.

I would call that a good record.

It is indeed a beautiful utilitarian rifle.

I've got four Winchester 94's and I've always admired the BLR's that my hunting buddies have.

Really a nice gun. I think you're getting the hang of this gunsmithing stuff. ;)

Have you tested the BLR for repeatibility taking the barrel off/on?

Thanks for the complement.
As to the repeatability not yet on the gun if the pics.

I've always wondered when someone was going to do this with a BLR. The ability to shoot .308 is just too attractive to pass up.

I passed up on one in 243 a few yrs ago for a steal and still regret it.

How durable are these guns?

that's a beautiful rifle. how does that stock compare to the one with the pistol grip, as far a comfort goes? i was looking at the different models and wondered which of the two styles i'd pick, if i were to get one.

They are an old design with a long track record of service.

People in the PSD roles in places where you cannot have semi auto box fed rifles have used them for years.

The strait stock is more comfortable to hold and the pistol grip is bigger.

People say the pistol grip gives you better trigger finger placement.

I would say the strait stock is my favorite.

I like it. I have never had a lever gun but I want to play with a couple or three and a BLR is on my list. I also want a 358 Winchester and the BLR is one of the few, maybe only production rifles offered in 358 so I can kill two birds with one stone. I am skeptical of the detachable barrel feature. How is the barrel retained? Is it sturdy? Durable? Does it hold the barrel tightly? Is the receiver aluminum? I think all the BLRs have aluminum receivers.

BLR receivers are aluminum, the barrel is on a cam lock with a lever, it is sturdy, and tight as can be.

The BLR is offered in impressive array of calibers, from 223 to 450 Marlin and including 358 and 300 magnum. A lot of these guns are under 7 pounds. I imagine they kick pretty impressively. I don't suppose a 300 magnum lever gun is something you will shoot thousands of shots through. How does the 308 kick? What's it weigh? How did you attach the optic?

07-11-11, 20:22
Interesting, you don't see a LR every day. Every time you post one of your lever guns I get thiiiiiis close to having you build me one. Once I finay decide on a caliber and get the funds together I'm going to do it.

Is the Aimpoint finished to match the receiver? If so what finish did you use?

Nice rifle. Do you ceracoat the inside of the barrel or nitride the barrel/chamber area?

The gun is just at 7lbs.
It kicks like you would think hard but not unbearable.
As to the scope mount it is weaver that is modified.

That is beautiful work sir, you are blessed to have the gifts / abilities / talent / resources, etc. to do what you do.

This particular gun really appeals to me, as an all around walking rifle, deer gun, etc. Too nice to keep as a truck gun, though.

What kind of accuracy can one expect out of a .308 BLR?

How hard is it to rebarrel if one wanted to switch calibers, say between .308, 7mm08 and .358 on the same action?

The accuracy is just over MOA with the right ammo.
Barrels are hard to get so on that I can not say.

Is there any way to enlarge the lever loop? What about muzzle threading? I'm thinking this could be one hell of a pig gun in .308.

The lever is made in a way that would make it hard to enlarge.
Threading it would be fine.

My 'other' 308 rifle is a BLR fitted with a Leupold 1.5-5X scope in Warne quick release lever rings---this to allow access to the iron sights if needed. My 'fun' 308 is a Browning Belgium FAL (50.00, 308 match) I bought new in the early 80s. That about covers the 308 for me.

I have a BLR in .358 Win. The only downside for me is price/availability of ammo. I love the accuracy and energy of the round but at $28 for a box of 20 (when you can find it) means I don't shoot it as much as I would like.

I was happy to see Hornady is offering it now. Maybe there will be more of it.

That said, if you want a lever gun, there's none better IMO than a BLR.

358 is a great caliber it's only drawback is availability.

I dream of lever guns like this. I think I know what my next purchase is going to be. Then I just ave to get it to you to be customized.

A little off topic, would you be able to cut down a browning sa22 barrel and thread it and keep the original sight. I would love to have another barrel setup.

you had to have stripped off the shiny lacquer and refinished it. The 358 Win has always interested me for no particular reason other than you can shoot pistol bullets from the cartridge for plinking. Do you do anything with the trigger on the gun? An 18 inch 358 Win with an 8 ounce Light weight 2.5 X Leupold in LW low rings would be a great gun. Thanks for sharing the pictures, you do great work.
