I've gone out here a few times:

http://maps.google.com/?ll=33.566716,-112.821264&spn=0.037189,0.07699&t=h&z=14

It's off North Wickenburg Road out west past Buckeye. There's a dirt road just north of the cattle guard that runs out towards the hill. A lot of people use this spot - I think there's been someone out there every time I've been out there, and I know at least one CCW instructor uses the place for his shooting qualifications.

Just PCS'd to DM from Abilene. I was tdy to Tucson a couple of years ago for a few months so the area is a little familiar to me. Anyone know of any good gun shops that won't run its customers around? Right now I'm waiting to hear back from the FBI as to why they denied me a firearms purchase but as soon as I do hear back from them and they allow me to buy I have a few things that are on my wish list.

I like Tucson guns, 8000 block East Broadway.
There's also black guns on pima and frontier gun shop
All these options are pretty good, however ARs local are overpriced when adding 9.1% taxes
however the BX on DM recently put in a gun counter, and they can order almost anything with NO taxes, most prices equal to intown, but higher than online. Such as Buds and the Exchange..
I've been buying from a gun shop called the exchange on line gun deals.
Good prices, no taxes fast shipping. I spent 10 yrs at DM with Combat Rescue

Good luck with the ATF flag your dealing with.

The Joe Foss range is just too regimented. They won't even let you draw from the holster.

I'd be up for that. Were you thinking a formal range, or somewhere on the back roads?

I've heard of a place off of Miller Rd near Buckeye but haven't been there myself yet. I'm guessing it's near here (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=33.440672,-112.597208&hl=en&ll=33.437865,-112.593397&spn=0.029259,0.038581&num=1&t=w&z=15), but I can't say.

I'm heading up off of Table Mesa Rd tomorrow (Saturday) - I like to get past the Agua Fria before stopping (leave most of the folks behind).

I have poked around north on Watson but there were so many people just randomly shooting off the side of the road and the area is covered with the trash they leave behind. Seems like a good place to get shot.

I fear Miller may be more of the same but I will check it out.

I live right near Shooter's World and go there sometimes for some 25-yard practice, but I've still never been out to Ben Avery.

Anyone know whether I can show up on a weekend morning and shoot at 100 yards? I see they have lanes, but I'm not sure how they're scheduled.

If anyone can briefly outline how it works out there, I'd appreciate it.

AZ-Renegade
04-20-12, 19:04
I've been to Ben Avery a few times. The main range goes out to 200 yards. They have 67 lanes [according to the website] on the main range so getting a spot usually isn't an issue.

The firing periods are approximately 15 minutes long.

Once they call cease fire, you leave your guns on the bench and stand behind the safety line until they declare the line safe. Then you go downrange to check, move and/or tape up your targets.

Once everyone is back behind the firing line, they go hot for another 15 minutes or so.

Be warned, the RSOs at Ben Avery take their job VERY seriously and WILL let you know if you break the range safety rules.

AZ-Renegade was pretty thorough but I'll add that when you go for the first time, you just need to watch a safety vid before heading to the range. The ROs are strict but that's because knuckleheads have ruined it for the rest of us.

04-20-12, 20:10
Right on - thanks fellas.

And do they have something to hang your targets on at various distances, or what's the setup like for that?

I've been shooting in the desert for years, but I've only lately become interested in the more organized side of things.

Packman73
04-20-12, 20:14
They have wood-framed stands with cardboard backing that you tape or staple your targets to. I wish they had steel on the main range like Rio Salado does, maybe I'd come back from the desert too.

Just moved to the Tucson area. I am an avid shooter, but work has made my training somewhat sporadic. I have only been to one USPSA match within the last three months. Would like to get to together with a group of shooters to go and train on a consistent basis. Is there a AZ regional group of shooters here that meet on a semi-consistent basis?

Look for the ACTS matches in N.Tucson at the Pima Pistol Club: http://www.actshooters.com/

It's 2 gun tactical match shooting, you should have no trouble finding people to shoot with there.

People from the Phoenix area go to these matches too. I've been wanting to go but never seem to find the time to drive down there for one....and I just can't do it in the summer months...it's just too damn hot for me!

While visiting family down there I did swing by to watch a couple hours of their match and it looked like a lot of fun stages they set up, still looking forward to hitting one after it cools off.

Good luck.

Thanks!

In short, my work history since the last 5 yrs is a bit spotty from going to college and dealing with some family issues, but I was raised to work and have experience running heavy equipment with my dad (backhoe, bulldozer, brush hog) and since his passing in '08, taking responsibility for myself, various shop work (drill press, lathe, ironworker), groundskeeping, basic mechanical skills (hand tools, some welding/cutting), tinkering with my own guns, etc.

My Bachelor's degree is in Health Education and Promotion and I am well versed in human anatomy, physiology, nutrition, fitness, injury treatment, etc. Now I'm really interested in self-sustainment and growing food crops but have only begun to get into learning about all of it.

Basically, I have a good bit of knowledge on my side but not much 'formal' experience to back it up with.. Seems like experience is everything these days, but where is a guy to start when all the jobs I find require x-amount of experience?

Didn't mean to derail the thread btw, just hoping I can get some much needed professional attention from a solid crowd!

Well, I'll be living in AZ for a week. Rather than starting a thread I thought the easiest thing would be to ask here... I've reviewed the DPS site and handgunlaw.us and from what I gathered, having an NV & UT CCW, I can go the same places AZ CCW holders can, true statement? Avoid the no-no areas like .Gov buildings, don't drink and basically everything should be kosher from what I've read. Please confirm.

Sorry for the thread drift but I thought this would be the best, and fastest, place to get an answer. Thanks!
