Is it worth getting an ACOG in 3x for a .308 rifle?? If range is going to be 400-600 yards, it seems like 3x may not be enough magnification. Any thoughts??

Sure is. I used one on a FAL for a DMR class run by Littlelebowski's brother. It kicked ass.

It's not something I'd put on a dedicated precision gun but it definitely improves the performance and gives significant precision to a battle rifle.

Once zero'd with a little bit of dope (coupled with a modest amount of ability) and you're easily capable of first round hits on torsos out to the distance you specified. It's no different than using open sights at 200 yards. A .308 is certainly capable of that.

It's also quite lightweight which is another big plus.

What size targets?
With a little hold-off and practice you should be able to hit torso sized targets out to 600 meters in moderate weather.
8" circles at unknown distances out to 600 in less favorable weather will be a bit dicier.

Been running this on a .308 bolt gun. Love it.

Exactly as you said, torso sized at no more than 600 yrds. As far as the ACOG goes, I just can't decide between it and a more dedicated rifle scope with variable power.
