View Full Version : Which 11.5 barrel to get?
Am waiting on my form 1 and am wondering what 11.5" barrel/upper do you guys recommend?
For my SBR I have a Colt 6933 Commando. Having no prior experience with barrels this short I had some doubts as to the accuracy and range of one these 11.5" barrels. Well, after just one range session, I was astonished how well the Colt short barrels perform in regards to accuracy. The upper runs very smooth also.
I would recommend it any day of the week!
Sounds great.
But since I have to ask, I probably can't afford it.
How much for the upper?
OK but what about an 11.5?

Well if you can wait for a while or find a good used one look into Bravo Company.

+1..I recently ordered a replacement barrel for a patrol rifle whose barrel was bent in a collision. They were very helpful and shipped in a very timely manner. I will do business with them in the future.

They also have light, medium and heavy weights in the 11.5 barrels.

WOW. That barrel costs more than most uppers.
I also have a 6933 and have made 200 yard hits on 8" steel with a 4MOA Aimpoint.
My one caveat on short barrels would be that if you intend to use a suppressor with a fast-attach system I would opt for a heavier profile. Mine has a pretty substantial POI shift without the can.
A Sabre Defence CMV barrel would also be worth considering. My experience is limited to two SDI barrels, but both have been very good shooters.
So far I'm looking at CMMG for either there 'medcon' or govt profile. Would love one of BCM 11.5 but they wont say when they will be available again. The other is Sabre but can't find these listed on there website so will call them tomorrow and see what they have.
Don't plan on a suppressor but I can see where stamp collecting will become contagious.

I usually just shorten an LMT barrel.
That's one way to get a very good quality 11.5" barrel without paying for a 6933 barrel.
Of course if you already have a 14.5" or 16" barrel on that gun, it can just be shortened as well.

Do you just cut/thread, or are there any modifications needed to the gas port size?

The gas port gets opened up accordingly.

Good point. I had thought about a lightweight 11.5" CMMG, but since it will eventually get a suppressor maybe I'll go with a medcon.
I personally wouldn't go CMMG if I knew I'd be running a supressor.
Too many damaged cans on TOS were mounted on CMMG barrels. (I know this isn't "first hand" experience, but more of a gut reaction based on the pics i've seen)
Wilson 11.5" EXT and LMT 10.5" are what I use. I've never had a reason to look elsewhere, though there are always new products popping up from some very reputable manufacturers.

CMMG 11.5 Government profile, Vltor Vis extended midlength,
I have a 16" midlength CMMG tube that won't shoot Wolf ammo. I know the simple answer is, don't shoot Wolf, but i wanted something i could run anything thru (like my Colt ;) ). I emailed CMMG, and i was told not to run non-brassed cased ammo thru it.
FYI, if you're a Wolf shooter

Why wont it shoot Wolf? Whats happening?

What buffer are you running?
If it short strokes, go to a lighter buffer.
I've shoot both Wolf and Barnaul in my CMMG 16 middy, Colt 16" M4 and a Colt 16" lightweight without any problems. They all had H buffers.
I've tried a standard carbine buffer; H; H2; 9mm, the results were all the same. The casing would stick in the chamber, requiring a cleaning rod to push it out. This happens ONLY with Wolf; Radway M855, US M855, M193, Q3131A, S&B, American Eagle 52 gr, and BH 75 gr BTHP all work without a hitch. I even took a low round count ( under 500 rounds) rifle course and it ran without issue with Guat 55 gr.
MH64, FYI my Colt 16" ltwt will also run Wolf all day long. I did have a 16" HBAR Bushy w/AK brake that would run every kind of ammo just fine, until it tried Wolf lacquer...jammed it up good, also requiring a rod to push out the case.
NOT the same lot.

Have you tried upgrading the extractor spring? Maybe this would help.

That should not be necessary on a mid-length gas system.
It will actually cause failure to eject problems in some guns.
Its one more thing to try.
Have been running upgraded extractors on two of my midlength barrels without any problems.
YMMV
i always add McFarland 1 pc rings and Specialized Armament green springs w/black inserts. I can't remember if that gun also has a Crane O Ring or not. Forgot to mention that part :D

Well you could try removing the extractor upgrades and seeing how it runs with Wolf.

I'm not a huge fan of Wolf, seeing how it downed TWO rifles, not just one. I'd prefer to 'solve' it by just not shooting Wolf through my guns.

That is the only complaint I have about my CMMG uppers. I have 2 14.5's, 2 11.5's and 1 20" upper
All the uppers do not like Wolf. They shoot everything else perfectly.

Mega bump, but I don't think it's necessary to make a new thread for one question. rob_s, or anyone, can you elaborate on this caveat? I am planning on building a 11.5" lightweight upper with a BC2.0 and eventually a HALO (when funds allow). Do you recommend a heavier profile barrel since I'll be running it suppressed?
TIA

What you're asking he answered in the quoted text.
Yes get a standard gov't profile barrel.
I don't know what lengths they're making now, but the Noveske N4 and the Centurion Arms mid-weight profile would be the best for suppressing.

Thanks for clearing that up. I didn't know if I needed a heavy profile barrel or go with a .gov profile barrel.

Those were my two main choices, along with the BCM and DD 11.5" barrels. Are the BCM and DD barrels on the same high standard as Noveske and Centurion? I know they make amazing products but I didn't know if the BHF or CHF would be as durable and accurate as the M249 chrome lining in Noveskes or the "3x more durable" Centurion barrels.
DANIEL DEFENSE, and don't look back

IMO much of all that terminology is marketing largely.
My issue with the DD and BCM in the suppressed application is that the profile is wonky, and the Centurion too. Not their faults as they are meeting the standard GI profile, but I respect Noveske and Centurion for breaking out of the box and using a profile that makes more sense to me.

always with the words, and charts, of wisdom. Thanks so much! I guess I'll coin flip between Centurion and Noveske.
Got my BCM 11.5" 2 weeks ago:D They said mid summer and the next day they got em in. I think they might be sold out again now. Those things go FAST
