I was given a new/unused Maverick 88 the other day and know nothing about it or shotguns except that it was refered to as a Mexican made 500 with a cross bolt safety.

Are they cheap?
Are they built like a Mossberg 500?
Are they reliable?
Can I replace the 24'' barrel with 18'' barrel?
What is required to shot slugs with this shotgun?
Are there upgrades to turn this into a good solid Shotgun if it's junk or should just get ride of it?
This would be used as HD and range use.
What type of ammo should I use for the HD role.

Like I said I know nothing about shotguns.

* Yes they are cheap. They generally sell for $200 NIB.

* They literally are a Mossberg 500 with a crossbolt safety, and different rollmark.

* Just as reliable as a Mossberg 500.

* If you have the 6-shot model, any Mossberg 500 barrel can be used.

* Nothing. A smoothbore shotgun just needs to use Rifled Slugs. Sabot Slugs are for rifled shotgun barrels.

* Its good as it is. Don't add anything except maybe a sling.

* Use 00 buckshot for HD.

Its a cheap shotgun, but they work. I think the Maverick is the best buy for a NIB shotgun.

Put 50 rounds through it day and 3 different times I had unfired shells hit me in the feet when cycling the action. Shotgun was level to the ground and in my shoulder when this happend. Like the placement of the controls except the safety. I am left handed and I think the placement of the safety that is on the 500 would be better for a left handed person.

had one for a while... it actually rattled less than my 500.

Was a decent gun, sold it when I switched from Mossbergs to remingtons.
