Figured I'd post a mini report on the bulgarian SSR85C I picked up the other day. Took it out to the range for a quick zeroing and functionality test. It is actually the second trip, the first was kind of pointless as I lacked a sight tool and just wanted to put some rounds down range. This time I had my site tool (and a backup hammer/site tool) for adjustments.

I started off at 25 yards and the rifle was WAY low and left, almost 7 inches low and 5 inches left. We brought the targets into 12 yards, got good groups then moved them back out to 25. The pic below has our final grouping. I wanted to put a nice 10 round group together but the range was closing early and kicked us out.

The first small group in blue was my first attempt back a 25 yards. A nice 4 round group but still to the left. The hammer and site tool came back out. Then another 4 round group followed. The 4th shot in yellow was shot much much quicker than I should have but it was fun any ways. These were all with wolf hp. They grouped a little better than the sp. I haven't tried it with the fmj or hornady sst yet.

Here is the rifle itself, with fugly stock and trl-1 I was playing around with.

I've got to say, so far for the price it is a fun little gun. I'm replacing the stock/pistol grip soon to make it more comfortable to work with. This stock is way too long and the bottom bar makes it impossible to use the pistol grip like a real pistol grip.

After that an ultimak front end to mount a red dot on and we'll see how it goes. I suspect there is a stubby grip and better light in it's future as well.

Looking good!

I'm one of the first to say I have no idea about the more rare AK's - but this one looks like it has a lot of Chinese in it.

Congrats on the rifle!

Before you buy a new stock, take off that polymer thumbhole stock and check the rear trunnion to make sure its not closed off.

It is. Going to have to drill and tap the back to mount another stock. Or do some other modification. I'm still in the process of picking which stock I want for it. To figure out what level of modification it will take.

I wish ace wasn't out of stock on most parts. One of their side folding triangle stocks, then wrapped in paracord is what I want.

I think going the Ace side-folder route would be your best bet. Do all the numbers match on the rifle?

Nope, no matching numbers. But I didn't really expect them too for the price.

Can you post a pic of the rear of the receiver with the stock removed?

No problem, I'll try and get it off today and snap some pics.

Here you go. I tried to get detailed pictures of the receiver sans the stupid stock.

The plate with the tang that covers the back of the receiver is pretty solid in place and has a rivet through the top. So my current plan is to get an ace side folding adapter and mount it directly to the receiver much like on an draco sbr conversion.

IF there is an angle or part I didn't get pics of let me know I will go take a few more.

I would just cut out the rear and use a standard stock it is a easy job, just take your time. That is a standard rear trunnion you just need to open the the back up to the Bottom of the tang.

Edit: I would cut just on the outside of the weld and use a file to flush it to the inner receiver

Do you think the back isn't strong enough to use as is? If so I'm good with that. But to me cutting perfectly good metal to add a $60 adapter to mount the folding mechanism on seems backwards to using the free metal already there. That is 300 rounds worth of ammo money :)

My Bad I missed you wanted a folding stock. I was thinking of going with the Fixed stock ,But that would more than enough to support it, if you drill and tap it to add the folder you want:cool:

Here are some more results from the range friday. It was a work outing (non shooting job) so I was short on time and rich on people shooting at my target before I could go get it.... But it was a fun day and a few people who never shot before got to come out and try an ak47 and 22 mag bolt action out so over all it was a win. Here are some groups one at 50yds and one at 100 yds. Both are iron sights with sand bag support. The 100 yard shots definitely let me know my glasses are out of date. It was difficult to see a good point of aim on the target. Next time I'll bring a sharpie to make a big black center dot and plan to stick to 10 round groups with no other shooters involved to get a better example of the rifle.

50 yd 9 yard group. Pardon the 22 mag holes interspersed....

100yd 6 round group. I'm tempted to blame my eyes and shooting more than the rifle for this.
